A value, travel EDC

I have grown more and more into the habit of carrying a knife at all times. This is fine around home since the laws are fairly good. However, I know when I travel, the laws can be less "fair" in other parts of the country. Also, when flying, the chance of my knife being stolen is much greater. This leads me to be seeking out an EDC knife to use when I travel that would not be a big deal if I lost it. Here's what I'm looking for.

1. Big enough blade to be used as a last ditch self defense blade but small enough to fit most local laws. I'm thinking 2.5"-ish.
2. No automatic knives or assisted open.'
3. Good, rust resistant steel since it may stay in my travel bag for months at a time without any love.
4. A quality knife.
5. A knife easy to find so it can easily replaced.
6. Not too expensive, so it can be easily replaced. I'm thinking $25 - 30.
7. A colored handle that does not look "tactical". Something bright like yellow, blue, red, orange, etc...

What knives meet this criteria?

There are sh!tloads of $10 (or less) knives available on line from places like Cheaper Than Dirt.com and ebay....of course, you get what you pay for, but they`ll get the job done at "disposable" prices.

I think a Swiss Army Knife would meet all of your criteria. Plus, they can contain lots of tools that would be useful when traveling - tweezers, scissors, bottle opener, can opener...

Spyderco Dragonfly sprint run with white FRN handles. I saw them for about $37.. Can't think of anything in your price range with the length of blade you mentioned.

EKI CQC14. 2.75" blade, it is wide so cuts bigger and the handle ergo's are superb. keepem sharp

PS didn't see the price point, forget the EKI and look at one of Boker's offerings in the CLB line.

The Ka Bar Dozier designed series look like a good value. You can find those for less than $20.00

In a folder, you can't go wrong with a SAK. In a FB Kellam Knives sells a Pukko with a red plastic handle and a forged blade for around $20. Maybe someone else can remember which one it is.

try to find a "second-hand" mini griptilian.
handle could be yellow, blue, etc.., blade is 2.9", good steel, sheeple friendly, etc

I would agree about the SAK.

Yep, and I don't even really like SAKs, but that is really the best answer for your needs. Just don't get a big, fancy 100 blade SAK that someone might want to steal.

An alox cadet, my edc of choice and sounds just like what you need.

I also agree with the SAK.

Not only are they reliable and reasonably priced, they also have the advantage of being generally recognized and accepted as "harmless" in many places around the world.

How about a small fixed blade?
Bark River - PSK, mikro- or mini-CDN

I carry this guy often (its a JK kit knife with 2.5" blade). Great little pocket carry knife.

For stainless and cheap - how about a buck diamondback guide. This one is a modded one - removed the rubber handle and double paracord wrapped. I actually really like this one for travel too!

A SAK is the obvious answer. I like the Alox Bantam. The Spyderco UKPK is meant to comply with our tough British carry laws and now has non-tactical looking coloured handles. They also do the Danish version for their even tougher laws.

Maybe consider a nice flashlight that fills the hands for a last ditch impact weapon. I think you can keep those on you at all times in airports (except for the one with impact bezels, but hose aren't necessary). I agree with the SAK suggestions.

I'm thinking Subcom. Fits the hand well, designed for SD and an excellent non threatening size.
