A VERY different color Damascus

360 brass will leave close to a bright copper color. Don't know about the phosphorous bronze. Just takes one oops to contaminate the etch and after that you are very careful.

if you don't buff it will the color stay on the blade?.....or will it easily rub off?....i kind of like the look int hose pics.....ryan

No the copper color does not seem to come off easily. I had to use 600 grit sand paper to remove it so as not to contaminate any more solution when I re-etched it. It certainly does not rub off. xxxx steel wool had no effect to speak off.

thanks for the info ken....i'm definately gonna try it...still lookin to see if a radio shack near me carries f.c......no luck yet....ryan

Ariel knives are really quite nice. The Damascus Ariel uses shows off much more of the copper color than the one I am using, much to Ariel's advantage. I was already thinking of using 2 etches on the next knife. The first to bring out the dark color and a second to bring out the copper. I see Ariel has already done this and I like the effect. The first oxide off of copper is malachite ( copper oxide) which is very green in color any one know what happens if you put it into the etching solution? Who knows possibly a green pattern. Wonder where all this is going to go. One thing I do know, got to be real careful playing around with this stuff.

Here's one that I did on purpose. I have two containers of ferric chloride and water for etching. One is contaminated with brass and mokume, while the other one is not. On this knife, I etched the blade with the mokume already epoxied and pinned onto the tang, knowing ahead of time that the etchant would plate the blade. I wanted a deep etch on the mokume and a nice flow of similar color back to the dyed and stabilized birdseye maple handle scales.

I thought it turned out extremely well.

I only make liner locking folding knifes and mostly use Damascus in the blades and bolsters. I do etch still with ferric chloride acid and then heat color where i get say three colours by using the heat. I sure like the coloring you got there !!! Frank
