Yesterday I fired up my little forge for the first time. It worked flawlessly, and got an 01 rod up to forging temp really FAST. (Compared to my 2 brick forge.) I pounded the rod square and was going to flatten it some more, but my policeman neighbor came home from a night shift, so I got it non magnetic and stuck it into some vermiculite for the day. What fun it was.

I wanted to thank all of you here. You've offered me advice for every newbie question. So much thanks to you all. One helluva great bunch. I know I have a lot to learn. I'll be back a lot I'm sure. But I wanted to show you the setup, and tell you thanks!

look at that nice clean stump with all its bark and that shiney anvil:D

All I can say bout that other stuff is...fun aint it:)

The stump was a real bear to get into place. Its hickory. 24" dia 24" tall and 300 lbs. Jeez. Flattening it with a chainsaw wasn't fun either.

Really pretty spalled wood too. Shame its going to sit there holding that anvil up.

Hey Andy, Lookin good Bro  You know what ? You are doin it man ! Not just talkin about it ;) That is the first and biggest step we all had to take and the one that makes the difference. Keep it up and before you know it you'll be helping us with tips you've found :D Nice job Buddy :)

Thanks David. So far I've squared round stock. It'll be a while before I have advice for someone thats worthwhile I'd guess. Thats OK with me. I'm having fun.

Bah consider yourself lucky to be able to find a stump. I've been unable to find a good heavy stump for so long i made my own out of 2x4s this last week

Nothing wrong with using a good stump to hold an anvil up, it'll give your shop character =)

Oh I'm not complaining at all. I quite like my 300lb hickory stump. Have you checked with a firewood dealer?
