I hope I don't hit the auto destruct or something by mistake!

Don't... Push... The RED BUTTON!

All right I'll stop pushing you. I understand completely, I'm the same way. I like giving stuff away, but hate getting stuff I didn't work/pay for. In fact not to long ago, I myself rejected a generous offer from someone here on the forums.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to do the basics with a computer/camera/phone. Of course, it can get complicated if you really get into it, but the basics aren't all that difficult.
Here is a hint for computers: The hardest thing, is knowing were files are, and were you are saving you files to. If you know were you pictures/word documents/songs are then it is as simple as drag and drop, or clicking a button. You gotta have an open mind though when you do decide to learn, because if you go into it thinking it's too hard and you shut your mind down the first time you hear a new word, you'll never learn. But, if you have an open mind, I think you'll catch on rather quickly.

P.S. Don't feel like you look like an idiot. The only dumb question, is the question you don't ask. Besides, most of us young guys don't expect you older folks to be super tech savvy, and we won't hold it against you for asking even the simplest of questions. You can't know if you've never been taught. I've never been taught how whittle, smoke a pipe, or make a sling shot. Would you hold it against me for not having someone to teach me when I was growing up? Would you think I was an idiot for asking simple questions about how to do such things properly?

No, I would'nt. To be honest I'd tell you to come on by if you were closer so we could go take a walk in the woods with a couple good pocket knives and a bicycle inner tube, and see if we can find a good hickory or hornbeam fork. Then I'd teach ya how to make a slingshot.

Similarly, I would invite you over to show you how to use your phone or your computer, if we lived any closer. See, knowledge was meant to be shared, people usually don't hold it against you for not knowing something you've never been taught.

About slingshots. I picked up some innertubes that had holes in them from the bike shop to use to try and make a slingshot, but when I cut a couple strips out of one of them, and was testing there stretchiness they would break if stretched too far. And, they didn't seem very springy. Is that just something you have to be careful of, or is there a special kind of innertube that works better for slingshots? Any other materials that can be used? How thick, and long do you cut the strips of innertube?

Just thought I'd ask, since I can't go with you for a walk in the woods.

BTW: I don't know if you enjoy camping at all, but if you ever find yourself in the San Francisco Bay area for any length of time, look me up and I would be more than happy to take you, or you and your wife camping in the Sierra Mountains, then you could teach me a thing or two. Or if you are ever in the Bay Area at all, I would be happy to teach you a thing or two about technology if you were interested. Or, if you just want to know what sites to see, I can help you out.

Sorry, if it seems a little weird to extend such an invitation, but I just love being with nice older folks like yourself, my grandparents, my mentor, etc. I believe that in most cases, with age comes wisdom, and there is just so much to be learned from my elders, even in simple conversation, that I tend to jump at any opportunity I can to get together with them.

Anyways, to sum it up, I have questions about slingshots, and if you are ever in CA look me up.

P.P.S. Thanks again for your participation on these forums.

jackknife,

Don't worry about all those functions on your phone. They're probably all mostly useless anyway. Besides, I've never had something so important to say that I had to type with my thumbs to say it.

If you ever make it to the Va Eastern Shore, let me know. I'll treat you to a pint if you show me how to make one of those slingshots:D.

You've got a deal, if you let me buy the second pint!

Its not uncommon for me to be down in the Maryland eastern shore, and I may be in the Crisfield area in the near future. How far down the coast from the Maryland boarder are ya? Of course thats enemy territory for a Marylander. They ever tell you about the Oyster Wars?

jackknife,

I can't say I've heard much about the Oyster Wars. Knowing how competitive some fishermen can be, I don't doubt that they were full of mischief and mayhem though.

As far as the Maryland line goes, I'm probably right around an hour away, and my gf's place is right around 30 minutes south of the border.

Don't worry, we don't shoot at Marylanders on sight anymore. In fact, we're almost friendly to them;)

Great read jackknife, and the cross country trip also, you are gifted.

Thanks for sharing.

Jackknife, awesome story. It appears I'm missing something here, if it's not too personal a question was your father Lawrence Devlin? If so man, that'd be one heck of a guy to grow up with. Thanks for the stories.

This is my favorite one. The one that convinced me that this is the coolest sub forum here at BF's.
I am bumping his one for newer members to enjoy.
I hope this does not anger the mods but this is a great story!
