I first noticed OHALLUM's "Blessings, Omar" tag line while posting heavily in the maintenance and tinkering forum. He left an immediate impression as a voice of reason in a thread where some unfortunate bickering was taking place. It didn't take long for me to notice that I virtually always either agreed with him or respected what he had to say.
One day while searching for fabric at a hobby shop I noticed a wood carving kit that included several knives, a sharpening stone and a block of wood. Soon after getting home and excitedly getting to work I realized that the knives (and the stone) were utter crap, so I started a thread in the general forum about carving knives. A few people, including Omar, chimed in and eventually the thread got moved to the projects sub forum where I changed the name of the thread. I think that thread has somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 posts now, mostly from me, Omar, jwren and a handful of other really great characters.
It was a natural progression, I suppose, that I end up looking to slipjoints and traditionals, especially in light of my quest for the perfect folding carving knife. I started rooting around on this forum here and showed some interest in these knives.
I guess I wasn't all that surprised when I got a pm from my man, but he couldn't have known how much a knife, like the one that he wanted to put in my hand, meant to me. You see, the knife was his grandfathers and it has a lot of personal history, it did for his grandfather and it does for Omar too.
I'm very blessed to have four children. I've been giving some thought to what will be passed down to them when I'm gone. One very special item will be this knife. It will go to my second born daughter Phoenix. I know that she will cherish it (hopefully) many years from now when she receives it.
The knife is a Schrade Walden 881Y complete with the plastic tube it came in when Omar's Grandfather bought it. It's in excellent shape. It's obviously been well loved, and Omar did an incredible job of honing the edges. They are razor sharp, which I wasn't expecting.
Here are some pics:
I love everything about the knife, but my favorite things are the shield and the edges. The packaging is awesome too.
So a (very) heartfelt thank you to you Omar. You're a good friend, and I appreciate your kind gesture. I won't forget it.
