A very unusual selling experience

If I have posted this in the wrong place I won't be offended if it gets moved but I thought it might provide a bit of a laugh. This really happened to me this week:

I listed a knife on ebay. It was an RD7 - never used, mint condition, lots of pics included in the listing. The price was below the general asking price.

The item sold. The buyer paid immediately. I posted it the next day, with full tracking on the package and could see that it was delivered. What could possibly go wrong?

I received this message from the buyer:

"I bought an Ontario ranger Rd7 and u sent a Becker BK9.
I can sent it back collect postage???

Now I knew what I posted. I didn't even have a BK9. A buyer with mental health issues perhaps?

His message had not been aggressive so I decided to respond in kind with an attempt at clarification. I sent this:

"Not sure what you mean. The knife I sent was the rd7 as per the photos in the listing. I have never had a BK9. Is the knife you have different than the one in the listing pics?"

A little later the same day I receive this response from the buyer:

"When I opened the pack it was a BK9, but I have just found out that my son and his mate have played a joke on poor old dad, by replacing the knife in the pack with one I already have and carefully resealing it. Hence my dilemma. Yes they got me good. Sorry to bother you. I have the RD 7 and it's a beauty. I will put you on fav sellers if you get any more knives. Thanks again."

Mystery solved. I bet there was an interesting conversation in that house later that day. I had a good laugh afterwards and was glad that neither of us had escalated it into something unpleasant.

They way you guys handled it says a lot about your character. This joke could have ended pretty awkward if either of you were quick to anger! Glad it worked out

Lol! I could have seen my two sons doing something similar back when they were in their teens. Kids, eh? Funny stuff. :D

I bought a knife not too long ago on eBay as well. I was out of town and watching the USPS tracking, and it said it was delivered. I got home the day after the specified delivery date, and could not find the package.

I sent the seller an email to see if he had gotten any notice back from the PO.

Later the next day I opened the freezer and saw a box from Omaha Steaks in there, and we did not have that when I left. When I looked at the box it had the address label etc. from the seller. I asked my daughter and she said the pkg came and she put it in there because it was steaks :-)

I also sent a note to the seller again explaining the "situation" to which we both had a good laugh.

I'm thinkin'.......good kids, a close and comfortable enough relationship with dad to consider such a prank, keeps dad and kids 'gotcha' moments on a level playing field and the intent and result came out exactly as planned. The buyer, his son and his friend breathed 'life' into what so many families have either lost, don't care about or simply don't see as worthy anymore......safe and pure, unadulterated fun.

Winners.........all the way around (less the short period of anxiety that you, the seller, endured, but it's obvious that you're a good sport). Best part and bottomline - it all ended well and I know a certain dad out there that will soon be furthering his relationship with his son through a 'retaliatory' response of his own.............and as well he should.......:).

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

That's awesome!

Isn't this why people have kids? So we can be smart alecks, torture, and prank our loving parents? I'm pretty sure it is. That's what I tell my mom anyway. :D
