I'm lucky enough to live not far from a very talented knifemaker in Mr. G L Drew. Went down to his shop to pick up my latest order, so thought I would post up a pic of my now matching combo of an ax and camp knife. Picked up the knife from Gerry yesterday, and can't say how impressed I am with it. The design came from a drawing tknife sent to Mr. Drew.
The knife is very stout, this one was made out of 3/16's ATS34. The handle is a pleasure, really fills the hand and has some very nice contours.
Gerry was gracious enough to give me a tour of the shop, and show me some of the process that goes into the making of a knife. Gerry does most his work in-house; grinding, heat-treating, sheath-making, and even stabilization of his beautiful curly maple handles with the most rednecked contraption I have seen in a while, thought it was moonshine!
If you ever get a chance to see a skilled knifemaker in action do so. Given me a better appreciation of what goes into making the knifes we love, and you can pick up some great sharpening tips as well.
Hope to post up some in use shots next week as I have a bit of a camping trip coming up next week. Stay tuned...
