Photos A Walk in Nature

I paddled my new kayak just under 6 miles down the Potomac this morning, then rode my bike back to the car.

I saw a bunch of bald eagles, but only managed to get a (lousy) picture of this one:

It’s partner flew away before I could get a picture - they had been digging into the muddy banks with their beaks - looking for shellfish, maybe?

Nice. Did you drag the kayak on a cart behind the bike?

I went for a walk along the tree-line, and in case I spotted a likely candidate for a walking/hiking stick, I dragged "Sweetie" along. Named "Sweetie" because this little Estwing 14A Sportsman's Axe is a sweetheart of a pack companion.

Went up to White Chief Lake out of Mineral King, Sequoia National Park.

White Chief Bowl

From the bowl we went another 1200’ vertical to the lake. No trail to the lake and a good amount was a rock scramble up this

The lake itself is nothing to write home about, but the view from the outlet pool is spectacular

We also spent some time exploring the caves that are in the marble there. Only 38F at the trailhead and temps maxxed at about 55F. Going high is great if you want to beat the heat.

My favorite photographic subject while walking in nature...
Dragonflies and Damselflies. You will also spot a Butterfly and a Skipper if you look closely.Collage - Dragonfly-DDS.jpg

It is likely I had one or more of something like this in my pocket or on my hip at the time each photo was taken:

Be well. Be safe. Enjoy.

We spent Thursday through yesterday on our last conditioning hike before the big event in just over a week. We went up to Mosquito Lakes out of Mineral King in Sequoia National Park.
The trail ends at Mosquito Lake #1, which is rather nondescript.

From there we went off trail up the basin to Mosquito Lake #2, where I have camped before

And then up from there; we finally stopped at Mosquito Lake #5, where we set up camp

Close to camp we saw this guy

Friday we went over the ridge to see Mineral Lakes; since we were already starting in an off trail location, and Mineral lakes are over the divide from there (with no trail anywhere near it), very few people go there. A good part of the way was terrain like this:

A couple of the Mineral Lakes:

Back near camp, a view toward Sawtooth Peak (far right) which we will summit on the last day of the big trip:

And then we went up to the highest lake in the basin, Mosquito Lake #6

One final critter picture, I know I am in the right place when I see a pika

Never been, thanks for sharing these amazing images

Someone who is going with us on a six day backpacking trip is from Ukraine and had never seen the big trees. We took her to Giant Forest.

We stopped for a snack by the Washington tree. The two with their back to me are closer to me than to the tree. The girl is right by the tree and is useful for scale.

A peaceful morning in the small channels behind the islands which hug the Virginia shore of the Potomac downstream of Point of Rocks:

It looks like a very peaceful place at the time. I'm imagining that changes quite rapidly at times though, by the looks of the shorelines.
Appropriate knife choice - were you fishing, or simply cruising on this day?
