Photos A Walk in Nature

Great knife and pictures. 🤠

Breathtaking scenery !!! 🌄
I like your style my friend :)
Cool pic of the the sun rays hitting the patinaed blade :cool:

Thanks gents! I give all the credit for the pics to the beautiful surroundings. I Just got lucky with the sun rays. My part was just getting up early and getting out in it, then snapping 100's of pics and choosing the few that turned out how I'd hoped ;)

Went on a 6 mile (round trip) hike with the fam to the Denny Creek Trail near Snoqualmie pass here in WA.

The trail cuts under I-90 and it feels like a scene from a sci-fi movie...

Didn't get to the Alpine Lakes (I would have had to carry my kids back down lol) but all in all was a fantastic day out with the kids!

Love Denny Creek and Keekwulee Falls. We're supposed to be camping there at the end of next week and I'm really looking forward to it. The proximity to 90 makes road noise an issue, but I scoped out the perfect campsite right on the river which should drown it out. My son (16) is already on me about making up to Melakwa Lake, so it'll probably happen, but I'm not sure yet. We did it on our camping trip there last year and it took the better part of the day. To be honest, I think the Falls are the highlight of the hike anyway, especially if you take the little trail over to cool off in them.

Anyhow, great pics and looks like a perfect day you had there!

Fishing over the past weekend on my "mini little adventure" was good.

Saturday rained on and off but I managed to catch a good fish and had my supper by the river.
I even shared some of it with an incredulous yacht owner that was moored nearby. He admitted that it was actually quite tasty :)

In an effort to procure my main meals from nature as much as possible when out on these little excursions ( which I hope to do a couple more before summer's over) I am trying to learn more about fish cooking methods/recipes

Yesterday, before returning I caught a couple more blue gills and smallmouth bass, cleaned, salted them and brought them home in ice.

So today I cooked them at home ( I scaled these ones first and left the skin on the fillets to see if it changes flavor ).

On the left of next pic is my usual way which consist of dipping them in a batter made with flour, egg and a bit of milk (when camping I bring little boxes of oatmilk instead ). For seasoning I used salt, garlic powder and cayenne pepper.

On the right I tried a more camp friendly recipe with less ingredients ( no eggs or milk ). I covered the fish with some mustard and then breaded it in a cornmeal and flour mix, a recipe I saw on YouTube lol using the same seasonings.

I cut the fish in small pieces to allow the coatings/seasonings impart more flavor and decrease any possible "fishy" taste ( we are talking bass here folks , nothing fancy LOL )

I kept the oil at around 350/375 F with the luxury of being at home with access to a thermometer

The results were very good
My wife preferred my "original" recipe while I like the crunchiness and taste of the cornmeal in the second one

Here is my trusty ebony lamb in the middle of the to recipes.

I caught a catfish last time out camping on my bike. I just washed the filets with clean water, salted them, wrapped them in aluminum foil, and put them on the coals of the campfire. It was pretty tasty despite the lack of seasonings. Of course if you are in a boat, you can bring more supplies, so there is no reason to be so spartan about it.

That looks fantastic Dan. 😋 All I ever do is put some flour in a large ziplock baggie along with a generous amount of whatever spices you like. I even use premixed spice blends sometimes, as long as they aren’t too salty. Throw in the fish and give it a good shake, and then fry them in oil in my grandma’s old cast iron skillet over some hot coals. I have used cornmeal also, but I just prefer regular old flour.

Looking good, Jack! 😎 Looks like some nice weather, hope you’ve been getting more of that.
Thanks Barrett, and sorry for the slow reply, I hadn't realised how long it had been since I checked this thread 😧👍
LOL, an hour more ?
I woke up 20 min ago.
Sleep almost 12 hours 😴, I don’t remember sleeping this good in quite a while 👍

So first things first.
I picked my designated carry for the day, my HHB 👍 and went for a little walk to take a picture of it 😎

Sorry for missing your big adventure until now Dan, but I really enjoyed catching up :) 👍
Visited Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore yesterday, it wasn’t great weather but still worth it and the views were still pretty good.

For those of you that haven’t been there, here is how you are greeted when you get to the dune. 😳
View attachment 1601076
This was our view when we first got to the edge of the dune.
View attachment 1601078
Then it began to clear up pretty quickly and turned into this view.
View attachment 1601083
Even though I said I wasn’t going down the dune, my curiosity got the best of me and I “Poked the Bear!” That’s my daughter on the left and I’m to her right, the other folks were on their way back up.
View attachment 1601084
My wife and son were at the top taking the pictures. We didn’t go all the way down, just about halfway, and I’m glad we didn’t. It was hard climbing back up but what I didn’t expect was the vertigo I was experiencing as we were standing on the face of the dune and looking out over the water. It’s hard to explain but you’re standing at an angle, looking down at the beach and when you look straight ahead all you see is water and when you look up all you see is water, really weird.
View attachment 1601089
The guy on the left was literally crawling a few feet at a time. He must have gone all the way down, because the whole time we were on the dune he never even made it halfway back up.
After getting back up to the top we went to the observatory platform to look back at where we had been.

If you look close you can see the guy crawling up. This was a great experience and I highly recommend it!👍
Fascinating! 😎 👍

I'll bring some foil next time Tom , it does not take up any room and can be really useful in cooking situations .
They do have grills at the lock stations and we'll also be camping in northern Ontario with the whole family at the end of August so there will be plenty of campfires to try it on :)

Thanks Todd. Yes, I'd like to simplify it as well . I'll try without the cornmeal too as it was a bit gritty with it.

Everything is better with PANKO (or peanut butter or maple syrup) well maybe not everything but lots and lots of things. :)
Thanks Ray , now I've got to try this too :).
I had never heard of it.
I was just educated by YouTube on Panko LOL
Seems the foolproof way to crispiness

I am happy you enjoyed my little adventure Jack :)
It was a lot of fun sharing it with my Porch friends

So I've been checking out recipes for the famous British style fried fish too.
Looks like I am going to need some really cold beer, fizzy water can be added too, baking soda and flour.
Looks like the secret to crispiness is having a cold batter.

Now if you guys excuse me I got to go fishing now LOL :D

Actually I did do in 3 of those big ones trying to perch the puukko on them. As big as the cap, the stem is quite fragile. :(
I had one beautifully set up shot and as I adjusted for its close up they all came tumbling down. The 2nd and 3rd attempt fell apart before I could even let go of the knife. Who knew? Please don't report me to the SPCM&F. ;)
