Hi there! Went up to the mountains here after Christmas to burn some fats from the big banquets we had and also to reflect a bit on another year went by and make some purposes for the coming one. Loads of snow this year, it looks a great ski season is waiting for us! I wanted to see the sun rise and therefore I left home rather early but not very early, the dawn is still around 08:00 o’clock AM during this period of the year. The first stretch of the trail, going through the woods, was relatively free from snow but, as soon as I was above the tree line, I had to put on my snow shoes. Reached a rather low peak (1400 mt) – moving in the snow it’s harder/slower and I didn’t dare to venture alone very high up in these weather conditions - having nevertheless a very nice viewpoint to the valleys below. Time for some shots at the magnificent scenery of a rising sun, a short prayer and some longer reflections and I headed down to a clearing where I indulged a bit on practicing my fire starting ability in sub-zero temperatures. The BIC lighter, Tempo tissue and wood shavings method I normally employ was successful this time also. Had a snack, extinguished the small camp fire, cleaned up and took the trail back to the village café for a more substantial breakfast and some chats with the early birds villagers. Back home before lunch! Knife with me the ZT 0909, a great hiking companion.

Wish you all a happy, serene New Year. See you around here!

Wow those photos are phenomenal! I had no idea Italy had winters like that.

Some beautiful scenery for sure!
On another forum I used to read, a member restored a stone structure like the one in your photos to be his home (it too, was in Italy)
He posted pics of of the entire process as it was done.
Fascinating stuff.

Hi!

M Man with no name : Thanks! Glad you liked it :)!

jmh33 jmh33 : Hi John! Thanks for appreciation! Nah, my hiking boots never really get hung up… :) of course with work, family, etc. chores it’s tough to find proper slot times to go up to the mountains but I always try hard! At least I manage to go for a walk/run/MTB in the woods around our house three/four times per week. Not so beautiful sceneries like from mountain peaks but it’s relaxing enough for an after work chill out .

B bore : Thanks! Happy you liked the pics :)!

JRRsix7 JRRsix7 : Thanks for stopping by! Yes, in the Norther part of our country we have the Alps, among the highest mountains in Europe. Winters can be "real winters" around here :)!

@JB in LV: Thank-you for appreciation and kind comment :)!

R robgmn : Thanks! Yes; an interesting thing happening up there is that, during these last years (the “crisis” ones), to fight the massive abandonment and the aging of the resident population, a lot of small Municipalities in the mountains have been given very convenient housing prices, tax reductions and even bonuses to people willing to inhabit again the old villages houses, refurbish them, work and live there with families. So several people got these old houses for very affordable prices and tax deductions to refurbish/re-build and now several villages enjoy a small scale revamp. Some refurbishing works have been very well executed  !

Ciao!

Great photos! From the depth of your footprints in photo four looks like you might need bigger show shoes that will give you more flotation. John

Hi!

J John A. Larsen : Hi John! Thanks :)! About snowshoes, I have upgraded my snowshoes last year and went for a TSL model, based on a suggestion from a Fellow Member here (thanks Mikel_24 :)). You are right, they are somehow “slimmer” than the previous ones I owned (their width is a couple of cm shorter) but very comfortable and I don’t feel like "sinking" so much in the snow: https://www.decathlon.it/ciaspole-tsl-418-updown-grip-grigie-id_8161773.html. Maybe it’s a “perspective” given by those pics as well ?

@Cryptic: Thanks! Glad you liked the post :)!

Ciao!

Thanks for posting the beautiful scenery around you as seen through your eyes. I believe there is some level of beauty around most of us but not everyone is able to appreciate it.

Nice Herlock! I really like the 4th picture from the bottom on the initial post. You must have gotten there really early to get the sunrise.

Incredible surroundings and pictures as always Herlock!
Thanks once again for sharing the beauty of our planet.
