A weekend with the SOG Spec-Elite I. A field report (Picture Heavy!)

I agree about the inner sharpness of the Spec-Elite II. I talked about it with Chris from Sog team during IWA show. I will try some sandpaper too.
Otherwise, it's a really great knife with a wonderfull blade profile.

One thing I noticed immediately was that the inner edges of the zytel handles are very sharp, especially at the thumb cutout. How were yours?

Is slightly sharp. To be true, I haven't noticed till you say it!
Is easy to fix with sandpaper and a minute of work!

Just wanted to say thanks for your excellent review

Thanks!

Sorry for my english :o

Great review! Interesting lock design. You are right no need to distrust the lock, though I wonder how the lock could be improved so that the actual locking pin/bar takes the load right from the beginning instead of the pin around which the locking bar rotates. I assume the cutout in the liners are just a tad to wide.

Very good review and video. Man, that knife looks like it opens smooth! My local knife dealer has a Spec Elite for 65 dollars and a Spec Elite 2 for just ten dollars more. I think that for ten dollars more, I'll treat myself to the Spec Elite 2. I've handled it alot in the store, and of all the large folders (blade over 4 inches) I've handled, it feels the best in my hand and opens the smoothest. I also like AUS8 steel because it, in my experience, sharpens easier than some more expensive steels. Thanks for the review.

wow, I love the review, im very new to the knife scene, and cannot help but read this site over and over again. My wife is getting very annoyed with my new found passion. I recenlty purchased a crkt m16-13z only to find out the poor reviews and horrible steel quality...once again I'm new to the scene..Anyways Ive fallen in love with the SOG Tomcat 3.0 and would love to see a review or get some similar feedback as to this review. Keep up the great work please. The pictures are excellent and really shed some light on everything for us new guys. Thanks again

I wrote a bit of a "first impression" review of my Tomcat 3.0 here.

Really nice review! Very informative. Maybe SOG will see this and consider reworking that part of the liners. Thanks.

This review has made me start to use my Spec Elite 1 again! I bought a bunch of knives quite a while ago at the same time and I guess I just sort of overlooked it. Really nice to already have the knife the review is about!
Again, like everyone else has been saying, Thanks for the review! Very well done! I look forward to more in the future.
About your English. You most likely have better English than I do! I am from the States but have now live in Asia Pacific for 5 yrs and my language here is nowhere near as good as your is.
Again, thanks for the review!

I just got a Spec Elite II, and I can tell you that the pins in the larger handle aren't that close to the edge at all. I wonder if they changed the Spec Elite I since this review was posted?

I just bought a Spec-Elite 1 yesterday. It has the VG-10 blade. If I have to take it apart to check on the liners, I will.

The Spec Elite was the first "high end" (for me that means $100 ish) folder that I got a few years ago. I still think that it is one of the nicest looking folders out there, and the smooth, quiet lockup is really unique. The VG10 blade is wonderfully sharp. I think that it is SOG's finest folder.
