A wet week bushcrafting & the TK2

G'day Mistwalker

They tend to prefer areas with sandstone (crevices & cracks in sandstone make good lairs). The most venemous species of Funnell web is the Sydney Funnel web that is supposed to be only found in a 200km radius of Sydney (personally I reckon 300km is more accurate). It is mostly ground dwelling, but will on occasion climb trees.

Best precautions are a zipped up tent in the warmer months, check shoes before putting them on, and be carefull where you stick your hands.

Kind regards
Mick

Hi Mick.

Thanks for the info, I'll make note of all this. I have a friend who lives in Penrith who sends me pictures of the Blue Mountains and the Nepean River Valley who says I would love it over there, but if I were going to come someday to hit the bush I should study up on the funnel webs and brown snakes some...along with a few other things. He sent me several discs of the best of Australian Geographic with Sorrel Wilby (theres a woman I wouldn't mind spending some time in the bush with btw, very interesting personality) and they are among my favorite things to watch. I think the one titled "World Heritage Rainforests of NSW" is my favorite but I like them all.

Now that is a trip!
Great pics I love and miss that place. I will be back there in December. Thanks for sharing that wonderful place.

Howdy.

I love your posts, Australia is just so fascinating to me...

I have a couple questions....

How big do the pigs get, are they just your normal north 40 variety feral hog? And do you hunt them?

How exactly does the charcoal method of dish cleanup work? How do you do it?

And what is the reality of carrying a knife for outdoor recreation? As in, if you keep them in your pack, and are in the bush or obviously headed to the bush, it is OK? What if someone traveled there, what sort of pain would it be to bring my cutting tools?

Thanks mate,
Marion

Been looking forward to this and I was right to. From what I can see your methods seem very much closer to my own than most I find here. And what I can't see confirms that even more.

I envy your winter. I like summer for the swimming but that's about it. I'm fairly certain our hottest day of the year has gone now and I'm especially keen to crack on with autumn / winter.

Curious, what boots are these -

Againk, awesome, thanks for sharing.
Lots of great pics and info. Australia is my first pic anywhere in the world to go and I will make it there someday. I hate snakes and spiders though....worst thing around here are the bears:)
Thanks for sharing

G'day RW

... And what are those delicious looking sausages called?
Chipolatas (I think that's how its spelt)

G'day lambertiana
It looks like a nice area, and it must have been especially nice to have some real solitude there.
Im very lucky to be able to get away for a week into an area where the only sign of the outside world is distant vapour trails in the sky :D

Being relatively poor country, the pigs in this area get to around 70-80kg.

Charcoal acts as a scourer. Add a little detergent and some coals from the campfire and its a lot easier to clean up the fry pans

As far as I'm aware, here in NSW you need to have a valid reason for carrying one (also known as "how long is a piece of string?").

If its obvious you have a valid reason, eg you are backpacking/fishing/hunting or on the way there & back, I don't think you'll have a problem. I would advise seeking a more informed opinion than mine before comming over.

They're a Columbia boot. Can't remember the model though. Comfortable and stable boots

Sweet pics! I would love to go to austrailia one of these days. Now I think I have to make it priority for a vacation for the family or maybe just me. LOL

What do use to sharpen your knives while in the bush? Do you carry a loaded strop or wait until you get home?

Sure looks like you know how to have a good time! Although with that many creatures around, I am not sure I would want to be stirring about at night, nonetheless it looks like fun.

Good think I didn't eat lunch yet... I would have been hungry again.

The 3G steel used in both the TK2 & H1/3G holds a good working edge for a long time. Combine this steel with a convex grind, and I generally don't have a need for a sharpener (even when out for a week).

I have used both a handheld DC4 sharpening stone  or a small strop in the past to maintain convex edges in the field. Both are light and work well.

Yes there are feral goats throughout this range.

This picture was taken last year in the same area.

Being considered as feral animals, there is no season & you can hunt them all year round (although the pelts are better in the winter months).
