A Winter Wander, Some Wild Plants, & A Snack In The Woods

Oh boy.. bugs.. one thing I am not looking forward too. Last night we got a good dose of Freezing rain, a big branch fell on the carport at my sisters house. One of those times I would really have rather had rain or snow, not ice.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the pics bro

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to the bugs either...

Rain or snow are usually better to have than ice I think. Yje ice always causes problems.

Glad you liked the post.

While I am reluctant to try and identify plants out of my area (and some that are in it :o ), I'm thinking Solanum carolinense (Horse Nettle)?

Great pictures, Mistwalker, you truly have a photographer's eyes.

Doc

Thanks Doc, I'm thinking it is horse nettle but there are so many night shades that I'm still not 100% certain.

Thanks for the compliments, glad you enjoyed the photos.

now I gotta ask what you're eating...oysters? sardines?

Smoked oysters as usual :)

Plants!! I forgot what they looked like. Hopefully things will thaw out over here by April..

Thanks for the pics Mist!

Yeah, I saw where you guys were out playing in the snow and sipping mead, just haven't had a chance to reply there yet. I'm sure all will thaw out soon enough. Thanks glad you liked the pics.

Cool pics! Thanks for posting.

Nice photos! Looks like a good relaxing day of just doing whatever and havin yourself a good time!

Thanks for sharing :)

Excellent photos!! I say Frogs Eggs

Thanks guys, glad you enjoyed the post.

Mist I sure wish I could go bush with you. You sure know your plants and stuff.
Glad you see you replaced your 4. It's a great bush companion and I know it's one of your favorites too.No matter what steel I take in the woods , the 4 is my main blade.
My son is 8 and a very picky eater but he can devour a whole can of oysters just like us big boys:thumbup::)

Add: Bought a couple of the Eat'N tools today , checked your old thread out , and you were eating oysters there also !!
Gourmet that fits in your pocket !

Thanks, I am learning them...there are so many...

Smoked oysters are awesome and one of my favs.

Definitely glad to have the new 4!

Yeah, I couldn't believe I left it in the truck...used it today though...it is a good little eating tool.

Great photos and them smoked oysters look good with the onions.

Thanks, it was a good snack.

Awesome pics, Brian.

Bryan

Thanks Bryan, glad you enjoyed the post

I love smoked oysters. I just whittle a small stick for a fork !!! That ESEE 4 looks good !!!!

Nah...gettin' too lazy for that in my old age :)

Great pics Mist! Ewww are those snails you're eating? Also isn't datura a hallucinogen? Wow nightshade, Mullein... Looks like a shaman's trip to the market!

Thanks Marcelo. No, couldn't find any....

I've read and been told that it is, nut I'm not testing it...

Yeah, it's even better in the summer!

Very cool pix. Thanks for taking us along

Thanks man, glad you enjoyed the hike, I sure did!

Cool pics as usual, bro. I'd say those are frog eggs as well. As for the oysters.... Those are used as bait to catch something better to eat! Lol

nice pics, man. you changed the esee-4's handle screws to a different kind?

part of practicing survival skills is not being a picky eater :)

Thanks man, glad you enjoyed them. The odds of me catching something in this area that I like better would be pretty slim. Would make decent coon bait, but I would only use the oil and maybe a couple of oysters as bait for the trap and then ONLY if I had multiple mouths to feed and knew it was long term.

those smoked mussels? one of my favorite snacks, with a slab of aged cheddar cheese

Those are smoked oysters but I like smoked mussels too, and cheddar is always good!

nice pics, man. you changed the esee-4's handle screws to a different kind?

Yep, changed them from silver ESEE-4 screws to black ESEE-4 screws :)

Neato thread Mist. That machete handle has aged like amber. Neato.

excellent pics.

it was interesting to see that you used the serrations on the rc-4 like a saw.

very cool.

p.s. maybe you should whittle a few chopsticks next time so you dont risk cutting ur tongue :D

Thanks man, glad you liked them. Yes that's one of the things I really like about the serrations.

Eh, I'm just used to using my knife tip to eat smoked oysters with if I don't have anything else handy, been doing that for a lot of years. Started with the clip point blade of a stockman and went from there....

mist as always nice pics brother. and i thought i was going to have to scold you for no pics of the FB machete. i know you don't go out with out it anymore :) i really love those red handles, i am hoping andy will offer then in a upcoming run or something.

HA, if I am anywhere near fields with briers and brambles the machete comes with. It's natural micarta and more brown than red...just a trick of the lighting I think.

Thanks bro, glad you liked the post.

Love the pics. Thanks for sharing. I carry smoked oysters a lot too- they are delicious! I usually whittle a small stick to spear them with as Tim mentioned earlier, but have been known to eat them as you do too since I always have at least one knife on me. Have a great day!

Thanks Rocky, I suppose I could have been a little less lazy and whittled a little stick...but it had been a long day :)

G'day Brian

.....In the field I noticed a lot of this growth on the briers,.......

They look a lot like what we call galls.

They are especially common on our Acacias and can be caused by either a fungus, or the larval stage of wasps.

Going by the holes in them, I'd suggest they are insect galls rather than fungal galls.

That last pic indicates that the larvae are still inside.

...Walking along the road I found some beetles when I pried off a piece of bark.

Ahhhh...there's nothing like fresh local bait to catch fish with :D

Kind regards
Mick

Thanks Mick,

I guess the larvae in those galls could make good bait too eh? I'll have to ewmwmbwe that, thanks
