A year with a Boker pen knife

My grandfather caried a small two blade pen/half whittler and i never understood, as a kid, why he carried such a tiny knife. I suppose, in my case anyway, its a matter of Experientia magistra stultorum (Experience is the teacher of fools) :o.

Chris

In most cases, our grandfathers were smarter than we were.

I have to admit that I have a great deal of envy for the old guys who did it all with one little pocket knife.

Having Knife accumulation desease makes me a bit in awe of our grandfathers. And how they got by with one knife, one gun, and a basic set of hand tools. Studying those old guys in the 1930's and 40's was a study in what we don't need.

But then, we have the disease.

I sometimes think myself foolish for using so many different. I have narrowed it down to a half dozen or so that I rotate but I own many more.
The men that I grew up around only used one knife and got along fine tho the were larger pocket knives. They used them for everything, most of them even used them for hunting knives.
My needs are pretty simple and I could probley get along with one of my little pen knives but it is usually a trapper that I reach for.
I look forward to seeing pictures of your mighty pen knife SilverFoxKnowes and thanks for sharing your experiance with us. Maybe one of these days I will be able to limit myself to one knife for one year.

The Böker pen-knife arrived this morning&I've carried it off to work!

Don't have my Imperial/Metric ruler with me, just a metric one. Just under 8cm nose to tail, 2 blade stainless with quite a nice blade etch(Normally I dislike etches but Böker do it better than others)

Honeycomb jigged bone, a new scale material for me and VERY pretty indeed:thumbup: Böker's Grand Canyon is another fine choice of handle, they really do the jigging well! Must look into other pattern with these scales.

Fit and finish very good and the snap is decently strong too, no blade rub either.Nail nicks are decently made, they can be too shallow on some tiny knives making opening difficult. It's quite a bit smaller than the CASE Pen which I think is THE right size and it could be a bit sharper. But, I still think Pens are more my knife than Peanuts are:D

Years ago I had a 3" Kissing Cranes penster with black micarta grips; no bolsters. I carried that for at least a year until I lost it . :(

These days I'm just too torn. Sometimes I'll grab a Moore Maker trapper liner-lock (the old style, not the one made by Boker, although I have them as well), other days (like today) it will be an older Case canoe or maybe a copperlock.

For a while I was carrying only single-blades; ("If one won't do it you need another tool!"). But, those canoes somehow snuck into the picture and suddenly they were in the top-ten.

I just picked up a Northwoods medium stockman w/ really pretty stag scales; the rationale goes something like: "Three blades are OK in a smaller package."

It's amazing what I can talk myself into when it comes to knives...
