ive had it a few days now, and ive been carrying it as an edc.

some initial impressions:

likes:

1. probably the sharpest emerson nib ive ever received. normally i touch them up on a steel, strop or both.

2. narrow profile makes pocket carry easy.

3. clip placement. i dont care for the low rider style. i prefer some of the handle to stick out making drawing a bit easier. it sits low enough to conceal with little risk of falling out, but high enough to grab easily.

4. nice utility minded blade profile.

5. fit/finish exactly what i have come to expect from eki.

6. clean lines, simple and basic.

dislikes:

1. because the disk is so close to the scale, and is about the same thickness, opening isnt as quick as other models. i have to "find" the disc, not as instinctive as the 7 or 13.

2. gritty opening. but this has always been the case with nib emersons for me. should just need some breaking in.

3. detente is hardly noticeable.

4. not available with the wave.

overall:

well made, great edc. closed length is nearly the same as the 7, but open it is close to the 13. seems to be a lot more knife than the 7.

i think this is more of a utility than sd knife, since opening isn't nearly as easy as the other two. i am unable to thumb flick this one open, at least not w/o some applied torque from the wrist. it is also difficult to get my thumbnail in between the disc and scale.

of the three the a100 is the narrowest, and has no protrusions to hang up on a wallet, keys, etc, when in the pocket. im happy with it, and ill find a way to fit it in to the rotation. ;)

i also suspect that it will be available in the 125.00 range once it is widely available.

Excellent review and pictures. Thank you very much.

"3. detente is hardly noticeable."

Does this mean the blade could come open in the pocket if jarred? Is the blade easy to flick out w/ just centrifugal force using the wrist?

Thanks,
bob7

unlikely, but possible. i dont think the weight of the blade is significant enough for this to happen inside the pocket.

yes, it can be done fairly easily.

Thanks for the answers. I like this folder and the cqc-12. Have to decide which one now.

It looks good, I think its a little bigger than I pictured it being and I like that blade profile allot.

two very different knives. i had a 12, and really liked the frame lock. but it didnt feel as nice in the hand as the 13, so i sold it.

also two very different price points.

i'm suprised the disc isnt more accessible, my I&I tanto has a similar handle but its cut out more than the A100 hence easier access to the disc.

looks nice though.

& again, i dont think it would look as good waved it would screw up the lines,

I dont have any Emersons yet. This might have to be the first. I might have to wait for more to be on the market so I can trade with someone.

I had a Emerson CQC-13, but I Liked the CQC-12 grip more so I returned it back to the store and got a 12.

You gotta try holding one in a store first to see if you like it, cuz we all got different hands.

Mori - thanks for the comparison shots, really helpful.

Any idea on when it would be widely available? A matter of months, I wonder, or years?

I have the 14 right now, but that slim, slim profile looks really attractive for EDC. Plus, I like the idea of having an EKI without the wave - I don't mind it on the 14, but it'd be nice to diversify.

i really have no idea, i was just speculating on the price based on the price difference with other models between msrp and on line prices.

just guessing again, but i would think within the next month or so they should be everywhere.

This is just a little off topic - but I do plan on getting the A-100 (not immediately, I'm in no rush) and then sending it off to make it an A-100-KG - can that be done on the black finish while keeping the Emerson logo?

I liked the black finish, but if it can't be done I'll go for the Satin.

It can be done but you will have a two tone blade (Black on the flats exposed metal on the bevel)
Im not a fan of two tone blades so i got my "KG" bead blasted to get a uniform finish so i have no logo on my blade.

if i was gonna KG it i would bead blast the blade, the BB looks a lot better anyway.

Thanks everyone - it's some time in the future, but I'll be sure to post if/when it happens.

I just took delivery of a p.e. model. I don't know folks just isn't floating my boat. Simplicity of design but just lacking decent handle ergo's for me. Some improvements could have been to extend the handle a .5" or so, blade maybe a bit taller by .125" and a slightly shaped C handle done to the bottom of the grips. Same thickness liners too. A nice little serrated thumb ramp behind the thumb disk would have been cool tool. But then these additions probably wouldn't have made it a A100. I can't for the life of me understand why they put one thick and one thin liner on knives. Just makes the knife seem unbalanced to me. Hey beats me maybe it will get carried and maybe it won't. Time will tell. keepem sharp

Something i never understood. Why do emersons have 2 ball detents but have the weakest hold compared to most knives?

Nagg.---Mine seem to hold the blade OK.---I can relate to what Morimotom said about the Frame lock vs the standard Liner lock Emersons, re: the hand. The Liner locks feel better in my hand, also. Hmm.
