A2 Hardened Platen for belt grinder

I started with a hardened D2 platten and wore it out m. Then switched to glass and never looked back. Static is a result of the weather and can be negated by using a static wrist strap.

why NOT profile on a wheel? The wheel is much more aggressive in my experience, and the abrasive lasts longer. Then square things up on the platen.

You’re totally right. I should have used the wheel for the rough profiling. I will in the future, thanks.

But since I already ruined two platens, I had to get or make some.

I’ll try and get the ruined ones flatten on a mill and use one with a ceramic platen and the other with a leather liner. Never used a ceramic liner and I’d like to give it a try.

Thanks,
Constantin

Interesting! How do you make a static wrist strap?

Thanks,

I recently put a ceramic glass liner on my platen. I have had zero of static electricity issues.
I have glass on mine and get shocked every few seconds but only in the winter in the cold dry air. A bit of static guard spray works really well. I've heard you can also take a wire brush and mount it to the grinder so the bristles run against the inside of the belt. Connect a wire from the bristles to the frame and you golden.

Make sure, if you use glass to have a little shelf for it to sit on so that if it does come loose it doesn't fall between the bottom roller and the belt and explode.

I just use the cheep ones that you can buy for computer repair. Thy are cheep and have long cords that attach to the wrist strap with a snap. Something like this is what I use, just clip the alligator clip to the grinder frame somewhere.

Winter is coming so maybe my luck will change :)
I mounted mine with G-Flex and a small MS polymer glue "shelf" beneath it.

Great, thank you!
