Is it just me or is A2 more of a pleasure to work with than ats34? I used an old belt to profile a blade, and it went very well. When I would grind out a profile from ats34 with a new belt, it would wear the belt out very quickly. I purchased the ats34 from admiral steel. Could it be that that steel was not annealed? The A2 seems to be alot more easier on the belts than the ats.

The difference in alloying element content accounts for a lot of this.

I grind almost all of my blades in the hardened state (slippies) that being said most
carbon-non stainless steels seem to grind easier than stainless. In the non hardened state most carbons grind like butter.

Which of the two do you guys think holds an edge properly Hted at RC60 for example. I know the ats 34 held up well but I wold not want to baton with it.

Properly heat treated A2 is some good stuff bro

Tuff and holds a good edge at the same time

My answer to that would be depending on the purpose, I'd trust ats cooked
right and froze right to take a thinner edge at Rc62. I could also say lets put
5160 in the mix and would anyone bet th A2 against it for rough use. (I have absolutley
nothing against A2 and its a great steel) just not the same alloy as ats or 5160.
