A2 Vs O1

Don & Nathan,

You're impressing me with W2's edge holding ability but, would it be at par with the toughness of 01 and A2? Remember, my blade size would be thin, small and would like them to have some ductility against tensile stress. Thanks

In my opinion, W2 (with it's super fine grain) would make a tougher edge, especially a super, thin, fine edge. It would not be quite a abrasion resistant though, but it would be close. I feel it could be temper to a higher hardness, which would likely result in higher abrasion resistance.

Keep in mind that W2 requires a very fast quench. Something to be aware of if you go that route. The fine edge stability of pearlite ain't that great...

Don & Nathan,

You guys awaken my interest on W2 steel which all along I thought is only good for a damascus mixture.:o It seems like it's similar then with 1095 with regard to quenching methology. The size I'm looking for is 3/32"thick x 2" wide x 36" long. Do you think that I can find W2 in this size and in its soft form? Would appreciate any help.

Thin W2 is not readily available, I use 2''+ round stock. Aldo Bruno has started carrying W2 and should have it.
