about 0005EKSLE Gen5 Skinner, Majestic Elk

154CM is the US version of ATS34- they are virtually identical in chemistry; 154CM is produced by Crucible Steel (which is now owned by Niagara I believe- after Crucible went bankrupt) and ATS34 is produced by Hitachi.

As far as 154CM and CPM154, the basic chemistry is where the similarity ends. The CPM deignation for CPM154 stands for Crucible Powdered Metal. It starts out a a very fine powder who's "granules" are very tightly controlled in size and shape. It is the processing of this powder that gives CPM154 its heightened performance. Also, its heightened price- it is close to S30V in price per pound- both more than 154CM.

As an aside, S30V is technically CPMS30V- it is a powdered metal also.

Thank you Mr. Keys. Do you have any input about the Elk Gen-5's with two different steel markings?

thank you Plumberdv! ...thanks everyone.

that Chinese seller is very honest i always knew! i think this one is not a clone . in fact, the other one is also in China today, it was marked #187/500.

in my opinion, normally, for official LE (005EKSLE), same model should be make from the same matel include handle and sheath etc,and should be mark the same script except serial number. otherwise, they are not twins and should be out of the same number's sequence.

i like GEN5 and have some, not for use just for collection , for this sake i hope to get the buck's official respone and explaining for this.

as Plumberdv's said "One explaination could be that Buck changed and started using blades from the Rosewood handled Gen-5's to finish the run of the Elk LE."
---- if this is ture, i can accept it.

I clicked on that link and a great big rice bowl jumped me! Kinda freaked me out!

There must be some fish mixed in with the rice, because this whole things smells as fishy as it can get.

Beware.

Crucible went bankrupt last year, but they are back in business and making steel. The mill was bought by JP Industries and the service centers were bought by SBI and Erasteel. Niagara Specialty Metals produces all of the sheet for the knife industry and we sell it on our own or through trusted distributers.

There is plenty of stock out there now so getting the steel you want should not be a problem.
