I am just finishing a forge/HT oven and I wonder if I should put a 1" thick piece of hard fire brick for the injecter nozzle to blow against. The reason I ask is bacause I built the oven using Kao wool board which reflects heat and doesent retain heat for very long. My oven is 8" X 8" X 12" long inside. I feel I should block off about 2/3s of the opening while the oven is up to heat or should I cut a 1 1/2" hole in the roof and block the door almost completely closed? The oven will be used at times for case hardening and will run for maybe 3 hr in a row at around 1700 F this is the reason for asking about keeping the door closed as much as possable.
Looking for Kao wool board? Check with your local foundry and see if they will save the broken pieces when they rebuild one of their large shell ovens -- you could end up with a life time supply
