Where I live there aren't any knife stores.

I'm wondering since all Axis lock Benchmades are tip up carries does the Axis lock the blade closed as well as open?:jerkit:

Checked BM's website and it doesn't say.

Thanks in advance..

I'm still trying to decide which one to get.

The AXIS locks I have do not lock closed, only open. They are held closed pretty securely by the AXIS lock, however. I carry mine down in my pocket and I've never had any problem with one opening in my pocket. 'Course, I also keep my pivots snug enough so that they require a definite effort to open them. They don't flick easily.

Axis knives do not lock closed. I carry them in my front pocket, using the clip, and have never had a problem with them opening accidentally. A Griptilian is an inexpensive model to try out, and they come in lots of versions.

The Axis Lock holds the knife snugly closed. You can pull the blade out to about 15-20 degrees and if you let go the lock will pull the blade back to the closed position.

Past 15-20 degrees the blade is free to glide to the open position, where the Axis bar snicks onto the ramp, locking it like a vault.

It is a work of genius.

It doesn't 'lock' closed, but you are going against the spring for the first bit, so it's almost impossible to open it accidentally short of dropping it.

Only if you are carrying in your front pocket, and only if the clip holds it securely positioned against the corner of your pocket. I find longer knives carry more comfortably against the front corner of my back pocket. I have also had tip-up knives slip away from the corner of my pocket and come partly open. YMMV.

I love my AXIS lock knives. The lock is one of the strongest available. Benchmade is one of my favorite knife companies because of the quality of their products as well as their warranty.

You should have no trouble with your knife opening in your pocket. Although possible to loosen the pivot to that point, it would generally result in noticeable blade play. In other words you would be fore warned the pivot was loosening.

Hope this helps, Shane

Oh ya I forgot about you "Back pocket people!" :D
I never carry my knife in my back pocket because it either gets scrapped up or the clip hooks on furniture. Also it interferes with my wallet.:p

I have a griptilian and the axis lock is one of the best locking mechanisms i've had the pleasure to use.

Thanks,

The reason I started this thread was I was thinking a 943 would fit perfect in my back pocket. I didn't want to reach for my wallet at the bank and slice off a finger.:(

If you are going to carry it in your back pocket next to your wallet, I suggest reversing the clip to put the blade next to the pocket seam. This makes the knife a tad less handy to deploy, but it will save you from impaling your wallet if something should snag while you are putting it away (been there, done that). I have been carrying a Spyderco Sage (tip up liner lock) this way for a while now with no problems. The 943 is a nice, slim knife that should carry there comfortably.

Seconded. It might seem strange at first, but try it. I actually find that most of my knives feel more comfortable when held in the "wrong" hand; my middle finger rests naturally in the U bend at the end of the clip. I don't carry in my rear pocket myself (I ride a bike everywhere, and I'm afraid the knife will fall out).

As others before have said, the AXIS Lock, while different than lockbacks, feels much the same. There's initial resistance from the spring, you get past that point, it moves smoothly, then locks into place. The only real appreciable difference in how it "feels" is that the AXIS lock is smoother (smoother than snail snot). Plus, there's the trick where you pull back on the lock and flick it (open or closed) into place. Fastest opening and closing on a knife anywhere apart from a double action out-the-front automatic (sorry, illegal in TN).

Faster closed, definitely. As for faster opening, that depends if the knife is in your hand, or in your pocket.

Well if you put it that way... My S&W Special Tacticals are liners that have a... "flipper" kind of thing connected to the blade protruding out the back of the handle when closed. I can push that and flick my wrist and snap it out as fast, if not, faster, than an Axis :D

I do love the Axis, though. My next knife MUST be an axis

What he said :)

I've never had an issue with any of my Axis locks opening up on me. IMHO the axis locking BMs I have are the best folders I've own to date.
