I'm thinking about buying a Buck 301 or 303. I would like to know how the handles are attached. Maybe they are glued on or something?

I just got a 303T at the local walwart this afternoon. The 303T has the plastic mother of pearl handle. The knife was surprisingly smooth. The 303T certainly opens and closes better than some of my case and scharde knives. I am pretty sure that the scale(plastic) is glued onto the handle. However, it looks sturdy.

hope that helps

My favorite knife is my 303 Poly-Pearl Cadet. The handles might be glud, IDK. I've used mine exclusively as my EDC for a few weeks now and its been holding up great. I love it! :D

I think I'll just check them out soon. I'm looking for a knife to complete my current EDC. I have my 110 for about ten years now with five years fairly hard use. Now I carry my Wave or Swisschamp and sometimes my Gerber Air Ranger2. But times are changing and when I pull my Gerber people look like I'm a criminal. Now I just want a little usable knife and not another SAK, my experience with my 110 is great and I think a 303 won't let me down.

The 303 is a very politically correct knife. I bought it partly for the same reason. I didn't want to scare people every time I peel an apple or open a package. However, the 420HC on the 303 can't compared with the VG-10 on my spyderco. So it won't make a great work knife, unless yyou are really into sharpening. jk

I carry a 301, 110, supertool, and micra daily. The one that gets used most is the 301. It takes a very fine edge and is very easy to control when doing fine work. I really love a stockman pattern, it just has so much versatility.

The 420HC doesn't hold an edge like VG-10, true. But you have 3 blades to go through and it sharpens from dull to razor sharp in a quarter of the time VG-10 takes.

The 303 will make it easily through a normal cutting week.

:) The 303 is one of my absolute favorite knives. I have a Poly Pearl in my pocket as I write this. One thing I like about the 303 and 301 is the fact that the sheepfoot blade has its own spring, it is not bent like it is on most three-blade knives. I know some early Buck knives were bent but in the last 10 or so years they have given each blade its own backspring. Not the mention the great customer service Buck has. I have many brands of pocketknives and Buck is at the top of the list in my book. I do not know what the Poly Pearl handles are put on with but I have carried one a lot in the last year and it has held up just fine. It rotates with a 503 Prince and 303 brown jigged bone.

I still have to pick one up, they are not sold everywhere in the Netherlands. Maybe I'll buy one on line. Thanks for the replies.

On the current 301 and 303, the inlays are molded directly to the liners/bolsters. Older versions were riveted on but that goes way back.
I hope this helps,

I have both a 301 and a 303, and they are very good knives! They sharpen up well and hold a good edge. The 303 is my favorite medium stockman, very handy knife!
I didn't know the slabs were molded on, that's interesting. I like the one-piece liner/bolster they have, too!

Here's one for Joe.

How about a Buck 303 with jigged bone handles & S30V or BG42 blades offered in limited numbers to the forum members. How can we do this?

Thanks!

I'd be ready to buy a 301 with jigged bone scales and BG-42 blades in a heart beat!!!

How about the good steels like S30V/BG-42, plus jigged bone, wood, or stag... BUT make it a Wal-Mart marketed knife! This would certainly bring in some extra cash for you, as Wally World has so many customers. :)

It's my guess that the price point of a high end 303 would be around $100. That's too high for Walmart.

Ah, you might be right. Hadn't thougt of it that way. Well, maybe if we just had a "slight" steel upgrade to 440c? I like 440C better then the other two anyway. :) It would be cheap, and would still save money for a good handle material like wood or bone.

Just picked up a new wood handled Buck 303 from WalMart. What a disappointment, this Buck 303 is made in china, as is clearly stamped on the sheepsfoot blade and box. It's thicker that the standard 303 and has brass liners, finish is OK, but the concept of paying over $24 for a Buck 303 from China doesn't sit well with me, it's going back...

I'll scout around for one of the 303 poly pearls made in the USA. I understand the economics of dealing with WalMart but do ask Buck to differentiate in model numbers or name for the products made in China.

Wow, that blows. I never even knew they made any 303's in China...
