About Opinels

. . . try carving a pumpkin with one, you'll never go back to anything else.

I used one on a pumpkin for Halloween two years ago, and I won't use anything else now, except maybe my Mora for big cutting on a pumpkin if needed.

I like the fact that the locking ring will lock it closed and open. A nice safety feature with small kids around.

thx - cpr

Well hell! I went gigging last night and didn't event get to use my new opinel knife. We only got two small flounders (12" of course!) and the visibility was so bad we began gigging mullets!! Six fish total in four hours. We did see some big redfish and a huge sheepshead. I'll get it used some time this month!

One of the fun things about Opinels is the fact they come in so many sizes, from big....

to small...

and all sizes in between.

Jackknife - some of those carved handles are really nice.

I guess I'm just going to have to go ahead and test drive one of these for myself. Gotta find that link again to where all the Opinels were.

Wow, that #13 is huge... What its for? Slaying hordes of undead? J/K. I've seen #12 and I thought that was big... I was clearly mistaken. Still, opinel's are really great knives.

I think it was the Frenchie's answer to Crocodile Dundee...:p

It is big but it is also sharp...very sharp. A folding machete maybe...

Funny dropping in on this thread because I just ordered a #10 yesturday, and now I find this thread an no negative comments............Great, looking forward to recieving mine.

I will say that I like the more modern Cold Steel version as well. They have been discontinued for years now but can still be found quite often on the secondary markets. The large is about the same as a 12 and the medium is about the size of a 9.

in the mediums they did 4 blade styles...

Since you mentioned our action-hero from down under, I just remembered seeing a Ray Mears video where some aboriginals used a huge Opinel to skin an emu they shot. I guess these guys would have to know what a good knife needs to be able to do.
Amazing how this design is found all over the world!
