Looking for a good knife to carry in the woods. I hate to use the term "survival" knife but you know what I mean. I've narrowed it down to the 2 or 7. If you had to pick one to have on your hip which would it be? Why or why not?

both?

well, the BK-02 is compact, and will take any task... velociraptors, zombies, or terminators... it's the one i'm most likely to drop into a pouch pocket.

the BK-07 is longer, thinner, and more slicey. not quite as compact for the packing in, more like strap to outside of pack, but then, i do that with the MachAx or BK-09.

if you want to go nuts, get a limited edition BK-77 :> plus, you'll get to see the new micarta faster.

depends really, on your immediate needs.

many of us, of course, have both (all) ;>

Personally, I would go for the BK-2 first. Like Bladite said, ti will handle anything you want to throw at it ... and more. Then, depending on your needs, you'll want to add the other Becker knives. You probably won't add as many as Bladite has (has anyone?), but you'll be so impressed with Beckers that you will want to add more. They're kinda like Lay's potato chips: you can't eat just one.

actually, you can't eat them at all :)

and yes, there's a few quiet people who have a LOT of Beckers.

Guyon has also been quiet, and i know his Becker collection fluctuates as he adjusts it, but he's probably always going to at least have a full working set, if not backups and old ones.

maybe even Ethan will start collecting :) heh :)

Okay, okay, Bladite, you can't eat them. They're too tough, no matter how you cook 'em. And I know that there are other people who have great Becker collections, but you have an incredible collection yourself. Every time you post it, it makes me drool.

if you want, i can find all the Becker boxes and take a picture. probably could eat those ;) perhaps there's a Joy of Cooking recipe? mmm.

No, that's okay. Cardboard boxes just don't do it for me, taste wise. It would probably take you all day just to photograph the boxes, anyway. I have an older version of Joy of Cooking, and it doesn't have a single recipe for Becker boxes. Maybe we should talk to Ethan about that. Maybe a recipe for "Becker box with garlic and truffles in an orange sauce?"

My favorite BK&T is no longer in production, but my 2nd favorite is... and that would be the BK-7.

Same size class as the famous USMC KaBar, but it's so much more.

You guys are not making this any easier. Let me rephrase and redirect. ;)

What are advantages of one over the other?

Okay, much of it comes down to personal preference, and what you need the knife for. Are you looking for a smaller knife for more delicate camp chores, a big chopper, or something in between? For a first Becker I suggest the BK-2. Why? Because it's an almost indestructible piece of 1095 steel with a 5 1/4 inch long, .25 inch thick blade that can be used as a chopper when necessary, spits (batons) wood like a champ, yet is still small and handy enough to use for camp chores. For me, if I could have only one knife to depend upon for camping and survival, the BK-2 would be that one knife.

As I said, a lot of it is personal preference. Some may think the BK-7 would be ideal, others the BK-11, but for me, for all around usefulness, I'll take the tougher than nails BK-2.

I don't know whether that makes it any easier for you or not, but that's my recommendation.

I have both and love both,
but:
One vote for the BK2... Just because.
There's something about a .250" thick blade that makes you feel like you can accomplish ANY task. Not very scientific but oh well.

start with BK2 it's a beast,then a BK9,then BK7
the BK2 BECKER TRAIN WREACKER!! it the one to start with.

Which ever one you get, you will end up with the other so it really doesnt matter. I went 2 first, then 7. What will you be doing with it for the most part?

i got the bk2 first and would recommend it, after get a BK9 instead of the 7, theres nothing the bk7 can acomplish that you won't be able to do with the two others

The BK-7 is an all around great knife. Plus it comes with a BK-13 so you get 2 knives instead of one BK-2.

BK 2 all the way! i will never need to carry a heavier knife. my companion is a beast and eats thru wood with ease!

Huh, I guess I have rare opposing view. The BK2 is overbuild, is heavier 1 lbs vs 0.85 lbs (I think I am right on this) and the profile makes it less of a slicer. The BK7 would be more useful to me with its added length. It will be better for chopping with its longer blade and will clean branches off what you chop quite a bit better. In my understanding the BK7 is not lacking in toughness. It also has the blunt hammer pommel which can come in handy for various camp chores. The addition of the small BK-13 makes for a very nice set to cover all the bases. That is my take on it anyway.

I have the Campanion and sent it to siguy for sharpening. It is a tough knife that can do almost everything. Not the greatest chopper, but can do related tasks (batonning). I recommend it.
That said, I want the 7....big time.

I want a 7 and I'm not even a fan of 'mid-sized' fixed blades. What's up with that? I know it probably wont even beat my scandi or hatchet when going into the woods too.
