About to test the forever warranty.

But what were you doing with the knife when the failure ?
If it just snapped from say flicking it open, from cutting a zip tie / nylon strapping, or a large chunk fractures off from slightly nicking a deer bone that's definitely a failure caused solely by the defect.
If somebody says " but I pry with my knives all the time and this one just broke too easily " , well then in that case the defect doesn't matter.

I am surprised that they didn't just offer you an equivalent knife to replace it, but I don't know what their assessment was while reviewing your warranty claim.
Youd be amazed at how somethings are just faulty. I have a 17mm xl matco wrench that shattered in my hand while adjusting a tie rod.

Or the stainless vg10 knife with a quick opening hole that fell 3 feet on hardwood and the lock bar sheared off. Not normal use but not normal failure.

Sometimes you just get a bad one. When everyone gets a bad one, its crap.

Looking back on my original post, I realized that I left out the picture of the back. Definitely shows the "character" of the knife! LoL

That looks like one of my father's knives. He was one of those guys who would ask to borrow your knife to scrape barnacles from a battleship. He was the reason why I never hand my knife to anybody.

I really wish Buck would let you purchase or send in a Super steel blade like S30V or S-45VN ect or perhaps a drop point.. Cost would NOT be a factor for me and I would gladly pay to really bring a damaged Buck back to modern Super Steel.
I think a new blade is a great idea!

I agree. I would have gladly paid more for s S30v upgrade. I had a Buck Vantage with the BOS S30v blade and it was fantastic.

Wow! They did an awesome job on that one.
Yeah, I was very pleased. I don’t know what the previous owner did with the knife but it was also very dirty.

I would get a black oily substance on my hands just from picking it up and the substance had soaked into the wood. I cleaned it up as best I could before sending it but it was still pretty dirty.

I bought it at an antique store for $9.50 for the sole purpose of sending it to Buck to see what they could do. It was my first experience with the Spa.

Here’s a couple more pics of the same knife.

You can tell a lot of metal had to be taken off, looks great now.

A replacement blade will be a new production 420HC with current tang stamp.
I asked about replacing the blade in my c1973 S5 V5 (2 dot 2 pin (not counting the rocker pin) with 2 small pins). (440C blade, like yours)
A S30V or even a recent 440C blade was not an option - warranty or pay for.

They did say the could do a blade transplant for $10, if I sent in one of my 2 SK blades "Smoke Jumper" (CPM 154 blade) for the donor knife.
I haven't done so yet. TBH I doubt I will. One of the covers/scales is missing about 1/4. Also, a prior owner used a electric "engraving" tool on the bolsters. Damage is at least 1/16" deep on both sides. If polished/ground out it would be uncomfortably thin. I doubt they would braze over the damage then grind and polish.
No matter. I have ate other 110's to choose from ... including a C&C SFO with a 5160 carbon steel blade and "oak" covers, and a 60th Anniversary, that were gifted to me. 😇

Thanks for posting. I was not aware that Buck would do this but I am very interested in possibly doing this myself.

Did they require that you send in only the Smoke Jumper blade or could you send in the whole knife?

Whole knife. The $10 covers changing both blades. At least that was my understanding.
I forget who my point of contact was. You have to make arrangements for the transplants in advance.

UPDATE!

I got a message from someone at Buck today with some pictures and I'm blown away! Not only by the work on the knife, but also the above and beyond attention to detail. Not only did they manage to get more of the dents and dings out than I expected, but they also managed to source a four dot blade to keep the knife period correct! I have no idea where they managed to find a "gently used" 40 year old blade, but I am amazed. It should be on its way back to me tomorrow and hopefully I will have it in hand next week. Now I have to browse the usual online suspects and find a sheath. The one it was in last is an old Schrade sheath that is more duct tape than leather! LoL I'm not sure who is behind the curtain but I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart!
