Abram Brooksbank (of Sheffield) folder

Hi Will, "butter and brown sugar" is a good description and a good turn of phrase :)

Good to have your feedback on the Ablett knife. Shame you had to put in some work on it though. Maybe I'll go down to the 'shop and stand there while it's made - wouldn't be the first time I've done that in Sheffield! :D Bad news on the Wright knife, it sickens me that that kind of garbage is being sold on :(Jack

I do own one of Ablett sheep foot knives with horn scales. It is simple yet well constructed and ready to use out of the box with no extra work on it, good FF, worth getting one while you can.

I appreciate the info Jack, thank you. The Wright senator is not inexpensive, about the same as a GEC multiblade. As much as I like the pattern, I hate to get a poorly made knife, especially when I can get a new Case or even Utica for much less that has little if any issues.
I am tempted to contact the one seller I know of in the US that stocks Wright knives to see if he can pick me a good one, if it exists.
If not, I may go for one of the working series Taylor's, they are priced right and have plenty of lambsfoot models. I really like some of the fancier Taylor's but they get really pricey fast. I was like their Norfolk style but the Case/Bose was only a little more expensive so I got that instead.

Thanks for the info Mike. There's a shop in Sheffield that sells Ablett knives over the counter and I can always go down to his workshop, so maybe I'll pick one up.

I think I'd go for the GEC! They look like fantastic knives, and in a completely different league to anything Sheffield produces. I have seen some Taylor's knives priced less expensively, but don't know what the quality is like. Many of the Sheffield cutlers get their knives made up by poorly-paid 'little mesters' all over the city, which is one of the reasons for the inconsistency in quality. I'm due a visit to Sheffield, so may call in at the Taylor's works. Their knives do get pricey very fast, and while I've always found their kitchen knives to be of good quality, I'd be reluctant to pay those sort of prices for knives that have such vague descriptions. It seems to me that traditionals made in the US and Solingen, are made with a lot more thought, care, and attention. I got a Rough Rider a few weeks back, and that's better than any stainless Sheffield-made folder I've seen with the exception of the Schrade-Wostenholm folders, which I understand were only assembled in Sheffield. What a shame the city can't do better.

Just had another look at the Taylor's range, and the high-end stuff looks to me like basically the same knives as the less expensive folders, but with fancy handles. The prices are ridiculous in my opinion.

I used to have a stag A. Wright senator model, all I recall is disappointing experience regarding FF and the (un)comfort of use as well as its high cost. I don't have it anymore.

Another reason why I love this forum so much, it saves me from spending money on mistakes (as well as costing me money on great knives!) :D
