Decided to try a some Merit ceramics. The price was right i so figured what do i have to lose. Two 120 grit belts in a row have broken on me now after about 20 minutes of grinding. Both in the same place at the edge of the splice. I Know belts break but this doesn't give me much confidence in the brand.

So i guess my question is could this just be a bad batch or maybe there is something i am doing wrong.

Any insight or advice would be greatly Appreciated.

Aren,

I had that happen with 10 in a row 3m belts, The company I bought them from said they were hanging around in stock for a while and refunded my money.

Good to know this happens with other brands because i actually like the belts. The 60 grit have been great at half the price of the Nortons i was using.

I had it happen to two klingspor belts. Got free replacements. Haven't had that before or since with those belts.

I have used Merritt's for years now and have not had one of them break. Check you me platen and also are you running them in the right direction?

The only belt I've ever broken was a 30 micron mylar backed belt that I was sharpening with on a wheel and had the edge up. Got lazy and the edge caught.

I thought it might be a directional problem but the belts i am using have no arrows to indicate direction.

What problems with my platen could cause belts to break?

I've had a couple 36 grit Merit ceramics pop on me. They broke next to the splice, not in the tape. That was from aggressive platen grinding on one side of the belt, i.e. rough conditions. Since then I take it easy with that type of grinding on those belts, and keep an eye on the splice as they get older, but they've been good belts otherwise.
If your belt starts to wobble all of a sudden, duck out of the way and shut the machine off, it's likely about to slap you!

It sounds like my belts broke in the exact same place, right along the edge of the tape. The 60 grits seem to be holding up fine to my grinding "style" but the 120s are breaking after about 20 minutes of use, running at slow speeds with less grinding pressure.

The top lip of of the platen, especially if it is a ceramic platen and it sticks out too much from the idler wheels. It can and wheel pull the tape off. Even if the tape doesn't come off it will prematurely wear your belts.

It could also be a bad batch, it's hard to say. I've used so many merrits and high end belts as well and the only ones that snap on me are the deefros cotton backs1.2k & 2k

I just had a Klingspor non-woven break and slap me in the chest yesterday. I had probably used it too long so I threw the whole set away.

I'm fairly new and have never heard of Merrit belts. Where do you get them?
