Hello! Does anyone know about ABS plastic knives; they claim to be durable, sharp and undetectable with metal detectors? Has anyone had any experience with these types of knives? Any suggestions on brands or grades worth buying for moderate to light use? Thanks! Sorry if this thread has already been discussed/posted!

Welcome to BF, fdtehsbd!:)

As far as plastic (ABS, FRN, Grivory) knives go, they suck at cutting and they can't easily be sharpened, so after you use one for even the most menial of tasks, you're stuck with an expensive piece of plastic. You'll find that a steel bladed knife does a lot better for any utility purposes you have.

LOL,

When I read the title, thought he was referring to knives made by ABS (American Bladesmith Society) members.

Me, too!:D If that were indeed the question, my answer would have been hell yes, as opposed to hell no!

Sweet! Thanks for the prompt response/s! My apologies for any confusion with acronym ABS! Your quite correct in your interpretation 3Guardsmen, as I was referring to acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) knives. Your statements confirm my initial concern/s about the blade integrity, etc. Although, I must admit, the prospect of concealment from metal detectors is quite alluring.
Thanks guys!
Oh and bye the way, I'm no he...just a chick crazy about blades!

Doh (smacks head)! I'm sorry about that, Ma'am! That'll teach me to make assumptions (and yes, I know what they say about assumptions). If I can be of any further assistance, please let me know.

LOL, me too!! I got fired up too!!

Welcome to BF!! It is nice to see another woman here too!!

I noticed that you make the statement "Although, I must admit, the prospect of concealment from metal detectors is quite alluring.", we do not suggest anything illegal. That comment concerns me.

I thought the post was an attempt at dry humor, I laughed good until I realized it was a serious question. Oh well, I can laugh anyway, right?

Yo! Don't be concerned about me T.K.C., I don't run with the bad guys! I'm just saying in a world of government incompetence, street crime/random incidents of violence, having a self defense/offense weapon that is undetectable to both "authorities" and enemies is an advantage to oneself. In concerts for example, there is always a chance that the goons at the front door will put you thru a pat-down and possible metal detector wand. If one had a plastic/wooden blade/kubutan, one still has back-up against bad folk. That's all. Perhaps I'm too paranoid for some. Late! :)

Well, in that case, Tom Krein makes a G-10 knife that you might be interested in.

Daniel Koster also makes a G-10 knife. He sometimes posts it in the Knifemakers for sale subforum.

Seriously "fdtehsbd", you need to be a G-man to carry one!
Either that, or you've just ordered some fried chicken to go...

Welcome aboard lady. Just like my forespeakers said, those are merely single use knives. They are indeed impervious to elements and strong enough so you can stab somone several times with them. You can get your job done and although you'll probably dispose them off after, you'll remain alive and it seems a fair deal ;)

Be aware that any "blade" that is not detectible by a metal detector is illegal to carry or own in California.

Yes, they are of great value, given you use them for what they were intended.

The Cold Steel Nightshade series go for about ten bucks each and can be deposited anywhere in the house, including on your person. They're light, fully capable of slashing and stabbing, and they're quite large. The Cold Steel Tai Pai is a wonderfully large weapon that is light, fast and strong enough to put the fear of God into a bad guy. On the CS video, I've seen these things hammered into wood without splitting. They cannot and should not be used as knives, but they can open parcels.

They're a good buy and are great to leave around paths to your safe.

Added: One thing I thought about after posting is this. It's rather disturbing that these knives have the same Kraton handles that Cold Steel's more expensive knives have. The CS Tai Pai (w/San Mai stainless) goes for more than two hundred dollars, yet it has the same Kraton handle on it as this ten dollar fiberglass-reinforced plastic. If one wanted to test the durability of the Kraton material, it would be better to use this Grivory knife than to use a more costly one made of steel.

The Nightshade Tai Pai is big, light and fast enough to open flesh, not to
mention stabbing.

Are they now?
Would that be slashing via it's moulded "edge" or directly with it's pointed tip?
IMO, a "knife-like" tent peg is a more likey description...
Plainly these models are more stake than knife.
