I'm planning on going to one of the Spring ABS introduction to blade smithing courses and was hoping for some advice.
Any recommendations on which school to go to?
I'm leaning towards Haywood's course because I'm quite a fan of Jason Knights knives.
Does anyone know of a camp ground(with a shower) in the area of the campus? Or a cheap place to stay?

Is there anything I should read or do before going to these? I've never done any type of smithing.

Anyone else planning to go?

From what I hear, going to the "Introduction to Bladesmithing" class at Old Washington (Texarkana - Moran school of Bladesmithing) in Arkansas is the best choice. Stay in the bunk house with the other folks and make lifelong friends. The instructor staff is the best around, and a total newbie will learn to make a good blade in two weeks.

FWIW I don't think the Bunkhouse is an option anymore. There was a note about it a year or two ago.

I'd suggest picking location, based on instructors you like the style and personality of, there's a lot of variance between them.

The school at Haywood wont disappoint, many people travel from far away because they prefer it, even though there are closer options. Between Greg and Jason, you'll get two distinctly different styles and methods, in the same class. Considering the weather thus far this year, it should be very pleasant, if it's not constantly raining. There's lots of local makers, and plenty to do in the area.

I can ask about a camp ground, there should be a few close by. This area is very outdoorsy.

I help with setting up the classes for Haywood, so if you have any question about the class send me at email and I'll give you my number and you can call. khall@hallenergyconsulting.com

This area is a big vacation area just out side of the Great Smokey Mountain Nation Park. Do a search for lodging / camping in Maggie Valley and Waynesville, NC.

Well, the Texarkana class is full, so looks like I'm signing up for Haywood. Mr.Hall, an email will be inbound.
