ABS Website?

I remember a while back hearing that there were going to be some updates to the ABS website. I've been checking periodically to see if it's been updated, as of my last look, that's still a no. I was curious if anyone knew when the new site was most likely going to be done, and if they were still accepting new members. As it currently says that the store is closed, I wasn't sure if they were still accepting new memberships, or if that's been put on hold until the new page is up.

Also, has there been any word on the 2010 schedule for classes, and who's teaching? I want to try to take the Intro to Bladesmithing class, but I'm a full time college student, so I was hoping to see what next summer's offerings were for that class. I'd rather not have to skip two weeks in the middle of the semester.

As a small aside, when I was looking at the class schedule for this year, the price was listed as 850 [link], but on the class listing it said it was 600 [link]. Does anyone know which is correct? I know the class listing page is older, but anything that could help save me a few pennies here and there would be great for me (college textbooks are a killer for cash flow). Since the site is old and possibly outdated, does anyone know if the scholarships listed on the class schedule page are still available?

Thanks for your time and help.

I cannot answer all of your questions but I assure you that they are still accepting new members. ;)

Alright. I had figured they would, but when I went in to their store page and saw that they'd closed up for the moment, I started wondering if they had frozen their memberships for the time being as well.

But I guess I'll be sending them a check, then. Thank you for your help.

From what I have heard and seen, the ABS is going to have a completely new site and much better than the old one. There will be a store and JS and MS pages. I am looking forward to it. The new webmaster says it should be up in a couple of months.
The ABS is definitely accepting new members. I would suggest contacting Bert Gaston at bgaston7223@sbcglobal.net or Jan DuBois at
spqjan1@aol.com for membership information. They can also tell you about classes and scholarships. The 2010 schedule probably will not be out until October. I hope this helps and that you are able to take the class.
Best regards

Been hearing about the new website for two years. I guess these things take time but my wife built mine in a few weeks? Will be nice to have a new updated ABS site

I sent in my new profile for the new site a few months ago. I would think when it is finished it will be very nice. Patience, this type of revision is going to take time to complete.

D. Bostic,

The price for the Introduction to Bladesmithing Course is currently the higher figure of $850.00 ( I attended the March 2009 offering, held at Haywood Community College). If you contact the ABS http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ABS_SchoolScholarship.htm you can view a list of available scholarships for various classes and the application requirements. Last year the new class schedule came out on the website very late.....December I think? The Haywood Community College venue is a newer offering by the ABS....an east coast alternative to the Texarkana class.

Hope this helps,

Bob

I've heard they haven't granted any scholarships for for the last couple of years. The application forms are as much as three or four years old. I corresponded with Scotty Hayes a few years back, but stopped hearing back from him. I've been trying for three years, but to no avail. I too have scheduling issues. I have to project almost a year out to line up everything necessary to get away. I will be going to my first official ABS event this next weekend up Maine. So far all my learning has been at the hands and hearts of the good folks on this forum and at some of their smithies and shops. If you have any luck getting through regarding a scholarship let us know. Good luck.
