"Standard Precautions for HIV
SPILLS
Clean-up using household bleach "clorox" (1tbsp/qt)"

Use to "clean-up", not "drink".

"Mix 1 tablespoon Regular Clorox Bleach with one gallon of water. Always wash and rinse items first, then let each item soak in Clorox Bleach Sanitizing Solution for 2 minutes. Drain and air dry."

Wash with, but don't drink it.

Get my drift? And, I was a boy scout too.

The top portion is for purifying water, the bottom portion is for cleaning unsanitary items which you plan on putting your good water into. I didn't mean to come off so grouchy from your other post, but it is rather offending if you re-read it.

On a side not, if you made it to Eagle, I made a thread in the buck forum called "Calling all Eagle Scouts..." you should take a look at it. It's been around for a while now, so I'll edit in the link for it.

Tramontina machetes, the best six bucks you'll ever spend.

Mora knives

Alcohol penny stoves, dozens of designs on the web to choose from.

2% iodine - 5 drops per quart/liter. I have a local pharmacy make up 50 mg capsules of ascorbic acid to neutralize the iodine. This is essentially the same process as Potable Aqua, but it is available here in Brazil for next to nothing.

PVC pipe water filter - I have several versions I've made, all variations on the same theme. It is basically two tubes with a pipe joint in the middle and a reducer on the end as a nozzle. The top section holds synthetic fish filter floss, the bottom section holds activated charcoal. THIS FILTER DOES NOT PURIFY THE WATER. It merely strains out all of the bugs and debris making the water more palatable, cleaner, and safer to treat with iodine, chlorine, or boiling.

60 ml syringe and plastic tubing - I use these to suck water out of hard to reach places such as water trapped in plants, water running under rock fields, shallow puddles in rocks. Attach the tube to a long stick and reach down into places you can't get to. I put a fishtank bubbler stone on the end to pre-filter the water coming up, it works great.

Cheap Chinese plastic dropcloths. - Here they sell 2x3 meter clear plastic dropcloths machine folded into a nice 3x4 inch square packed in a heavy duty plastic bag. I keep these in my kits and packs as emergency shelters. They make a great waterproof roof in any type of shelter you care to build. Mac

How about a bandanna? They come in very handy for all kinds of tasks and can be had for dirt cheap.

Information, read anything and everything about bushcraft, survival, hunting, fishing, etc.

I like that idea. I wouldn't know anything about batoning and Really knowing how to use a firesteel if I hadn't have found this site and other ones that people on here link off of. Info is free but priceless in the bush, or anywhere really.

My wife thinks I am weird but every time we stay in a hotel I take the little bars of soap. Of course some soaps brands they leave for you are better than others.

It's something like a table spoon for every so many liters, I'm not sure, but someone will know. :)

It depends on how much organic material is in the water and the water temperature.

If the water is fairly clear, 2 drops per qt. (or 8 drops/ 1/8 teaspoon) per gallon and stir. 30 minutes wait will have killed most baddies (NOT crypto).

Longer wait = safer.

Cold temps slow action of bleach.

Bandanna/t-shirt = expedient filter

Closed container = slightly better action (slows evaporation of chlorine gas).

for me not only the soap i ransack the whole room and get quite a few "goodies" sewing kit, showercap, matches and also the soap :D

dont ask what the shower cap is for it just a good thing to wear when you are cleaning a dirty space or paint the ceilling prevent things from entering your hair :D

Technically batosai117 was not incorrect, a tablespoon will just clean about 20 litres!
He never said how much it would clean.
Drier lint is my favourite tinder, I consider it cheaper then free, as you have to clean it out of the drier to reduce drying time and save energy.

I have never really tried pj and cotton balls though, I'll give it a shot.

Dont know about you guys but in Aus we have a bandanna day at schools for Charity. You can get heaps of bandannas cheap, in different colours and you support charity.

Just try PJ and dryer lint, VOILA! Violently burning pile of tinder!

Actually, using about 1 tablespoon per 100 gallons of water will create a 2 PPM solution, which is about what drinking water is (2-3 PPM ... about the same as the target levels in a swimming pool). If there are a lot of organics in the water it could take more.

So tablespoons work ... given enough water.

Typically if the chlorine concentration in water is too high the "victim" will taste/smell it immediately. Assuming it is ingested, mouth irritation and possibly vomiting is likely to result - rather than death.

Death associated with chlorine usually comes from breathing in the chlorine gas, rather than ingestion of high concentration solutions.

I travel so much for business I made it a 2008 goal to only use free "road soap" at home for the whole year. Besides some of the soap is really nice stuff.

While we're on the topic...would one of you gents be so kind as to provide a link to the "What's in your Altoids Tin?" thread? I have it bookmarked, but on a different computer.

Grab a bunch of the plastic grocery bags you have in your kitchen and stask them in a BOB. Will work to carry stuff (oh duh) emergency rain cap, waterproof bandage cover, and I am sure there are other things they can be used for. Compress pretty small
