Absolutely nothing to do with survival

To clarify Runningboar's explanation, I would just add that "1SG" stands for "First SerGeant" - only to be outranked (on the enlisted side) by the ("Command") Sergeant Major, which is CSM, or SGM depending on their position.

Diceman is correct. If it is an infantry or other type of line unit it would be a CSM that is the ranking NCO in the battalion. He is responsible for all enlisted health welfare and training and all Nco's answer ultimately to him including the First Sargents. Non line units get SGM's. Both are E-9's. Master sargents are also E-8's like First Sargents but again, they are in a non-combat usually a non-leadership role. I too was an NCO but was a lowly E-5 in an infantry company in charge of a scout squad 25 years ago. I'm still proud of that though.

I'm an E5 as well - and would never butt heads w/ any 1SG! Thought I might be pissed if he up and used my favorite knife on a tray! I was an MLRS (multiple launch rocket systems - the new "Field Artillery" hotness - pretty lethal!) Crewman in the reg. Army, and have recently gotten out to go back to college, and am serving w/the MT National Guard for now.

My best buddy works on the MLRS at White Sands Missilie Range.... indeed a lethal "gift giver" for our enemies. A while back, we were at the stables removing for transplanting a tree. We'd tied a thick rope from the stables around his ball hitch and, it tightened up so much we couldn't get it off. So he turns to me "Hey, I think I'm gonna need that Nimravus".

So I hand the knife to him and watch as he kneels down to get at the rope. I can see as he's cutting that, when it gets ready to slice through, the blade is going to go through quickly and hit the hitch! So I say "Stop! Here, let me get that"

This turns into a polite arguement, you know...."I'll be careful. I know what I'm doing" etc etc. I finally have to say "Look. If that blade touches the hitch, I'm gonna use it, no matter how dull, to bury you right here"

He laughs and hands the knife over to me to finish the cut..... :D

Dice,

I am a promotable E7 waiting for my number to come up, me and top are on pretty close terms, if we started really pissing at each other he would win but it would be a pretty nasty contest.:p

I was down range with 1 41 FA and got to see your MLRSs in action, some aweome firepower. Chris

Runningboar - congrats on the promotable status - sounds like you'd be a really cool 1SG - for those that don't know, most enlisted guys don't make it past E6 by retirement - you've gotta have your $hit together to make E7, and E8 is a HUGE accomplishment! Again, Congrats!

I never got to use one of the MLRS pieces in combat - I was stationed in Korea for the majority of my enlistment (they had some nice extension incentives!) - but we did do live fires w/ inert warheads, and it was still pretty awesome! They sure light up the night sky!

I don't know about all that, afterall I made it :D and if you talk to my wife she will definetely argue the point.

I am in a fantastic unit now and have about a year left here and then I have to go back to the regular Army and deployments but boy am I enjoying it while I can. Chris

Thanks For the explination I thougt thats what you meant but wasnt sure.

My cousin is an E9 Fire Cheif in the USAF and He sometimes adds a T as in 1SGT or Master Sgt

That 150t is a schrade correct?

Is that the Mustard coloration?

I have to try some of these techniques on some of my ebay finds.

guys don't hate for this...I am an O-2. But i'll be a civilian in under a year! You guys make it happen...we (officers) just do paperwork and never get to do anything cool.

running boar as an E-7 you are the shit! I still do what ever my chief (E-7) in the navy tells me to do...congrats man! I've learned so much more from you guys then the scum suckers above me.

Even way back last century it was pretty common knowledge that if you wanted or needed something to happen, you talked to Sarge. I mean from the lowest grunt to the brass. I'd never have come back to the world if it hadn't been for mine. Many of us would not have. Smart louies knew that and listened to them. Dumb louies didn't and caused unneeded casualties.

It did take me a while to train my woman not to hand me a tool, knife or scissors business-end first  Even a hammer or wrench, you'll get a dirty look if you hand it to me like that. Does that drive anyone else crazy or is it just me?

Gibsonfan: I agree with this, handing a tool corectly handle first is a sign of respect and handing it blate or haed first is a sign of disrespect. it is also alot safer.

agree 110% i find people look at me funny when i open my pocket knife then spin and flip it so the handle is facing out and the edge is down when ever someone asks for it at work...

GibsonFan, I was taught from a wee lad to always offer a knife or tool handle first...

I thought you guys would understand. I think it's a blue-collar thing... folks who were brought up around tools and people who use them, generally have been taught that kind of safety and respect (both for the tool and the person you're handing it to!) from a young age.

About NCO's and officers... I never served, but I'll tell you this, it's the same in the "real" world. I have way more respect for the guys who've done what I do and rose up, than for the guys who inherited the business from their daddy and think a piece of paper with a fancy college name on it, means they know it all. Not to disparrage officers, executives or CEOs, I'm sure there's a few worth their salt :D

My wife used my rukus to cut some meat on a china plate, When she was done, she threw it the sink with the rest of the dirty dishes. I found it when I drained the sink. It survived. With A little oil, and blade touch up, its as good as new. And remember "till death do you part"
