Accessing dry kindling without batoning?

not to be evasive, but I carry tinder with me, as well as a packet of fat wood. Like you show with your question, sometimes its difficult to find what you need when you need it.
 
Keep all of these good tips here in mind, but always carry a small fire kit with a bit of good tinder, it could save your life and who knows, you might loose the knife, not have a knife or be to injured to do much with one or both arms. Injuries probably create more survival scenarios that everything else combined. You usually are not planning on being disables from a fall or some other natural occurrence, at that point, it's not a game anymore you need only be worried about grading from Mr Grim Reaper himself.

Couldn't agree with you more. Something we never like to think about,but should go there first in our plans! I'm already rethinking/replanning my EDC. Maybe I'll have to start calling it my Murphy is alive and well kit!! LOL
 
It has happened to me several times, You just never plan on a accident as you go about your tasks, something you have done a 100 times can all of a sudden go wrong fast. It doubles in important if you live in the north and or spend a lot of time in or near water. Hypothermia can happen even in the best of climates under the worst of conditions.

We all hope it won't happen but you read about it every day, many of the people who find themselves in a bad way are not dumb or rookies to the outdoors, in fact they are often the ones who think, it won't happen to me.:eek:
 
The bushcraft course I run for Army cadets each year ( they are limited to a folder under 4inches) We teach cutting a wrist thick ( and that long) standing dead wood branch with a SAK saw and then splitting that with main blade. That can give you your match stick thick pieces. The kids also carry a tampon and a lipbalm in there home made PSK's ( almost instant PJCB's.)
Although they are using a Gerber sportsman here to speed things up.

Well if you had a saw on your swiss army knife, you could saw halfway into the small log then give it a good smack to split it down the middle, then do it again to get into the dry middle. Do this like swinging a bat and hit a hard object and the wood will split.
