Accidental Design: Watcha think?

A few weeks ago I drew up a couple of designs on construction paper and cut them out to transfer to steel. After I cut them i was left with a piece in the middle and I thought it looked kind of interesting. I've been around this forum long enough to know that it probably won't get high praise due to impracticality but I'm going to eventually make it anyway. I would make it now but I'll wait until I get a port-a-band because I usually just profile on my grinder and this one would be way too much waste and work.

I see it as a camp chopper and self defense mixed use. I think it is just under 13" and the reverse edge would be sharpened. Probably far fetched, but it could also be lashed to a pole and used as a spear.

The only real tweak I would make to the original cutout would be to bring the main edge back towards the handle a little more to extend the main cutting length.

Happy accident or waste of time? photo-92.jpg photo-93.jpg photo-94.JPG

I dont think I have seen a design like that. It looks kinda cool to me. Definitely "outside the box".

I like it. I have been think alot lately and telling my wife I need to design something new and outside my normal box.

I say run with it. I agree with lengthening the main edge, and I would add a lot of holes for lashing purposes too.

It looks like there's just enough steel in the middle piece to make a skinner.
I like that little chopper you've got there. What is it, about 8.5" or so?

Thanks guys! I've never thrown a knife and I probably won't try unless it was either cheap or someone elses. :)

I was only thinking of a few lightening holes which could be revealed if the wrap is removed. The wrap could then be used as a lashing. At least one hole would be useful further up but do you think it would be okay or not worth the strength sacrifice?

Thanks Leif. Your way off, it's actually 8.75 :) I doubt it will be much of a chopper but we shall see. photo-92.jpg

I was thinking the same thing leif was. With maybe some very slight modifications to the belly it could be a nice skinning knife I'd shorten the handle a bit though. I built a knife a while back that I'm hopefully going to finish shortly , that probably wont receive much praise. But I built is specifically to fit me and my needs or what I felt would work out nice as a skinning knife. Now I just need to get it finished to actually see if it works as good in reality as it does in my plans.

It looks like a blend between a hatchet and a large camp knife. When I see the large knives that people use as choppers it seems that the part of the blade near the handle is probably not used in chopping so it would make sense concentrate more on the part of the blade at the business end.
