Accidental Opening?

I had a CRKT something or another with the LAWKS system open in my pocket. It wasn't serious, a little poke in my leg.

Seems the situation is worse than I suspected:eek:

I have a couple of Mcustas that come in sheathes-they are the size that doesn't have clip(I don't like one on ebony scales and they interfere with hand grip).I would like to carry them in my coat-pocket slippie style but I'm having second thoughts now....They are fast openers with excellent lock but I suspect they could open on you,esp after reading some responses. So, better keep them in their sheath, only thing is, the sheeple eye sheathes with particular alarm and suspicion.Better than getting stabbed in the hand, abdomen, back or privates though!

I decided to force an "accidental opening" with my Gerber AR-3.00 that's clipped to my pocket, right now. As it sits, I needed a very deliberate motion in order to get it out, with was compounded by the fact that there was little leverage/ movement room for my hand. If I put my hand in my pocket to withdraw keys ora something else, I don't think I could have gotten it open.

Don't get me wrong...I did not mean to imply that EVERY liner-lock will open inside your pocket.
But liner-locks by their very design only have the ball-detent and pivot tension holding them closed.
And the blade does not need to open but just about 1/16" to overcome the ball-detent.

But with a lock-back there is constant backspring tention keeping the folder closed, and the blade needs to be opened much farther than about 1/16" to overcome that backspring tention, just like any standard slip-joint folder.
This does not mean that a lock-back CANNOT open inside your pocket, but I do think that it is less likely to do so than a liner-lock folder.
If a lock-back opens inside your pocket, I would suspect a weak or broken backspring.

Had a Spyderco Ladybug (green PE) that opened up in my pocket twice. Second time, it cut me. This is a very small lockback BTW, but the blade tip did not go far enough down into the frame, and the spring strength was pretty weak.

I switched to a Spyderco Jester and have not had problems.

Also, I should note that I had two previous Ladybugs (CF and blue) and never had any trouble out of them.

I've never had a problem with a knife opening in my pocket, and I've been carrying every day for 17 years or so. (What's that, 6300 days or so?) I carry right side, tip up and have had nary a hiccup. I've only lately been concerned, because when I go around to clients I often switch to IWB to avoid panicking the sheeple (I work with a lot of interior design firms, not the most knife-friendly places in the world). I carry an Emerson CQC8, and being a guy, I'm a little paranoid that somehow it might come open and go after my my nutsack or my ding-dong when carried IWB. Right side tip-up with a waved Emerson (liner lock) is totally safe- the blade rides as close to the back of the pocket as possible so that the wave will engage when it's pulled out.

Well, I have been carrying for 33 years, and have only had 1 knife open!! moonwilson, just wait another 16 years!! LOL! I am just kidding! In all seriousness, I HAVE been carrying for 33 years, and have only had 1 knife open on me.

The other day, I clipped the Kershaw Nakamura back in my pocket and heard a ripping noise. The end of the blade was open slightly and the blade poked a hole though my jeans (tip down carry). Not sure how it happened to be open.

I have carried folders since I was about 5 year old. Try convincing your Mom at 5 you need a knife. Had a great grandfather who convinced his daughter I needed a knife but my Mother made him grind the points off and dull the blades. By the way my grandfather did this at his cotton gin. How many people remember what a cotton gin was? Any way I am now 56 and I have had only liner locks come open on me. These were quality knives bm and emersons. To me tip up on most liner locks can be an accident waiting to happen. Thats why I like the axis lock and lockbacks. I also edc a Chris Reeve small classic sebenza I trust and do not think it will open. I also carry Bob Dozier folders and trust them. If you don't have a good ball detent on the liner lock I would be careful. I must admit I like all types of knives and think the liner lock is a strong locking system.

I had a benchmade panther open in my RFP when going for money at the gas station. It was damn hard hiding spurting blood from everybody while trying to pay my bill and leave. It actually stuck into the Right hand little finger bone and was disconcerting to say the least. I lost a lot of blood on that one, more so then when I got stabbed in the hand in a defensive manuver at my job. Keep your tetnus shots updated. :) Joe

Only one time in many, many years did I have this issue happen to me. It was a quality frame lock that carried tip up. The knife came open JUST ENOUGH for the tip to catch the top of my RHP when I went to remove it. Cut my pocket but no injury to me. This was a big knife with a heavy blade.
