I hadn't seen Adam in a while so I visited his table at BLADE to find out what he'd been up to. He had exceptionally nice knives for sale, a very lovely lady (Haley) by his side and a huge grin on his face. Apparently things are going quite well for Adam DesRosiers these days!
From Adam's home page www.alaskablades.com :
Adam is back in the fire!
I have just completed construction on my new shop at my homestead in Excursion Inlet, Alaska.
I have been making some great new blades in the last couple months, and I'll be posting fresh photos on this website on a more regular basis.
I am just now setting up a computer at home, and I should be a lot easier to reach now.
Thanks for your continued interest in my blade work.
I came away from my visit with Adam having bought this beefy (but beautiful) blade, the design and proportions of which I found compelling. The original plan was to give it to my oldest son as a graduation present. He's been looking for a nice camp/chopper type blade and I told him I could probably find one for him in Atlanta - and I did. However, truth be told, I'm having difficulty letting go of this one. The BLADE Show was six weeks ago and my son still hasn't gotten his graduation gift!
The blade is a real winner, literally (see below). Adam provided an appropriate custom sheath and a padded zipper case too. Here are a few particulars and a picture:
Steel - blade is 1095 and guard is 416 stainless.
Blade - 9 1/4 in.
Handle - 5 3/4 in., curly American Walnut.
Weight - 1 lb. 3.6 oz.
Balance point - through the middle of 'Alaska' - perfect for its intended uses.
Provenance - Adam used this blade (since re-handled) to win the cutting competition at this year's Great Smoky Mountain Bladesmithing Symposium and Knife Show, held March 6-8, 2009 at Haywood Community College, Clyde, North Carolina (new home of the ABS Bladesmithing School).
Adam & Haley... cutest couple at the BLADE Show this year - by far.
I was already set up to shoot portraits at the show so I invited them back to the studio (Coop's knife photo room - thanks Coop!) for a freebie. While I fiddled with the lights and camera they worked on posing. You've probably heard the old saying, 'you can't hide talent.' Well, you can't hide being in love either!
