Hi, I bought a Wuertz surface grinding attachment for my KMG grinder and it worked well but I think a horizontal position like on the Wuertz TW 90 is easier to use so I made a new tool arm from 1 1/2 inch square aluminum bar which I milled the first 8 inches down to 1 1/4 square and reinstalled the 5 inch Bader contact wheel and the Wuertz toolarm bracket. The tool arm now works in my GIB horizontal mount grinder. Here are two photos,... sorry they are a little fuzzy. I thought some of you might be interested. Larry

Larry,
Very cool looking! This is the second one of the TW SG attachments I've seen modified to fit other 2 x 72 machines!

How is it working for you?

Laurence, I just set up the new tool arm tonight and haven't had a chance to flatten a blade. I will profile a new blade and test it out but I'm pretty sure it will be fine because I checked the contact of the magnetic table and it is touching evenly. I previously ground the table on my KMG and ground a blade and even tapered the tang and here are a couple pictures. Larry

Hi Larry, was it that big a pain in the butt to make you switch from vertical? Cool new toy by the way.

Lu1976, No it wasn't because I already had built a GIB and made a table to flip it horizontal. I just thought it would be fun to adapt the tool arm to the GIB grinder. I just ground a profiled blank today and it works great. Each end of the blank measured .200 when I was finished. The vertical attachment worked great also but it was a little difficult to hold the table back and clean it with the other hand but I could have drilled a hole and put a stop pin in it to hold the thing up while changing the blade sides. This is better though. Larry

That is too cool to taper a blade with it. That would be wonderful to be able to taper on a SG for exact level taper.

Laurence, I know you have seen knives by Don Nguyen (spelling?) on this forum. He is using a Wuertz attachment on his grinder to grind the bevels on his chef's knives. I know that he shims the tool top to bottom as well as from side to side. He posted some photos this last year showing how. I know you make really nice kitchen cutlery and might be interested in the technique. The tapering is really easy because you can use feeler gauge leaves to give the total amount of taper per six inches. I am not a huge fan of tapered tangs but putting a gradual distal taper on a thick blade is really neat. Larry

Thanks Larry, I saw on Travis website his video on grinding bevel using the surface grinder.Fast
