Hi Guys – I’m new to knifemaking and so far most of my questions have been answered by searching the archives. Anyway I can’t find anything on my latest question – How would you go about putting a Fire Steel compartment in the handle of a full tang hunter?

I guess I could cut a fire rod size slit in the tang and tread a portion of the slit at the pommel end to hold it in place. However I’m sure that there are easier ways to do this.

Also I remember a few weeks ago a maker posted some pics of a really nice knife with a fire rod in the handle but, of course I forgot to book mark it. If anyone remembers this can you post a link?

Thanks
Paul Murphy

Thanks a lot Eric - Yes - yours is the one I was trying to find. Thats a fantastic looking knife. Gives me a good starting point.

All I did was slot the tang so you have an empty spot in the middle for the steel then drill out the slabs to the proper diameter when they're secured up. Quick hint, clamp the knife across the handle slabs in a vise when you drill it otherwise the bit can catch and separate the slabs from the tang. I learned that one the hard way. Better way is to drill prior to epoxying, then epoxy (clean as much excess as you can with a swab and acetone) then clean out with the drill again after cured. Good luck and make sure to post pics when ya' get her done!
