One of a kind.

I've been making knives for a few years now, and this through-tang, re-curve bowie is my largest knife to date, and also the toughest.

Basic specs

Blade material: W2
Blade length is 12 1/2″
Blade thickness at spine: 7/32″ (0.22″)
Through-tang
Overall length: 18″
Overall weight: 2.55 lb
Guard and pommel material: Classic bronze
Handle material: Desert Ironwood
Sheath material: 9-10 oz. veg tan leather

Using 88% copper and 12% tin, I smelted and cast the classic bronze guard and pommel. Bronze is harder and more wear resistant than brass, and I think its a nicer color as well.

This beast is no wall hanger. It will perform as good as it looks no matter what (reasonable)task you set it to. This blade can chop, slice/slash, or stab equally well, and the pommel is a virtual sledge hammer that could easily break bones.
60 HRC at the edge will remain razor sharp through heavy use, but the blade is ductile enough that will not crack no matter how hard you strike, and the bonus is the beautiful hamon. Thats the advantage of differential hardening.

20 degree secondary bevel

The end of the tang is threaded, and the pommel is bolted on using a tapped bronze nut I made to fit during the same pour as the other fittings, and the tang is also pinned through the handle, so its as solid and secure as you would want
with redundant mechanical attachment points. Its not a take-down. The pommel nut is epoxied, torqued on, and ground flush.

Its a fairly heavy knife, but the pommel balances the blade extremely well. The balance point is immediately in front of the guard, so it doesn't feel heavy in your hand at all. It indexes very well.

I also made the sheath myself from scratch. Its really much too large a knife for a belt sheath, so I forged a couple mild steel rings and riveted them to the sheath. You could easily hang this from a shoulder strap.

Disclaimers:

Life is not forged in fire. This bowie was designed to perform in all areas where one might expect a bowie to perform. It can be used as a survival knife, or as a formidable weapon. You could cut small trees or chop wood
just fine, but if you try chopping boulders or batoning it into railroad spikes, or any of the super-destructive tests they do on that show, the blade wont break, and the handle will remain intact, but the 60 HRC edge
would likely chip

With a differentially hardened blade, the spine area above the hamon is not hardened, so it can be more easily scratched/scuffed/dented than the edge steel.

The hamon is a surface feature that is revealed in the polish. Heavy use (cutting/chopping wood) can scuff the hamon.
