i was just wandering how many of you all have hurt yourselves bad enough that you couldn't work in the shop , and it was driving you crazy that you couldn't grind ,buff cut glue sand , or put pins in something? and i've only been making knives for ashort while!!!

Rookie,
Usually any minor injury keeps me out of the shop for just the rest of the day! Getting THWAPPED in the head by a broken grinding belt will do it. Also, jamming the point of a knife up under my thumbnail while hand rubbing has taken the wind out of my sails

So far, nock on wood, nothing worse than a one day retirement!

I have told a great many people who were interested in getting into knifemaking that dealing with pain and overcoming fear of the equipment were necessary parts of what we do. Most look at me like I'm kidding. The saw cut at the front right of my thumb hurts a lot when I try to hold something with my fingers. Would it keep me out of the shop? Not ever. I love my work more than I hate pain.

Like Neil, I've had belts break. A few years ago a brand new 60 grit let go (BANG!) and took off most of the back of my little finger. My greatest concern was getting the bleeding to stop, so I could get some triple anitbiotic on it and wrap it up, then back to the shop. I view these small happenings as badges of honor.

Two years ago I got hit by a falling tree while making firewood. That kept my out of my shop for 8 weeks.
I guess I was lucky though - a week later the same thing happened to another guy nearby. He was killed.
