Adding a horse mat handle

I know there are a number of threads on this handle material and on the process. My question is this something that can be done as a first timer?

If not, are there recommendations of folks who could do this?

I'm still trying to work through the forums info and rules so pardon me if I missed a rule. Thanks!

I used fiber glass pins and the thin clear epoxy from west system and it worked ok just know that the handles will start to peel over time what I do when that happens is lift up what I can and put a drop of CA glue in there and pinch it shut for a few minutes. Also might try G-flex from West system.

...I wonder did I got your challenge right?

Well, anyway :)

One trick is to have a thick walled polyurethane tube (horse mats and skating rink walking mats are generally made of this stuff) and heat it up with a hot air gun up to a nearly molten state, and then force it quickly around the tang. Wear leather gloves.

The other trick is to use heat-shrink tubing in multiple layers, or, one or two layers of cord around the tang and then a layer heat-shrink tube.

I really wonder if I was any help.

Scales is what i am after. Shrink tubing is an interesting method. I'm familiar with the process others have used to do this (in theory). Its the skill set I'm after. Either DIY or use someone who has experience with this handle material.

It's used a lot with Bladesports knives. I'm making a couple myself and plan on using horse stall mat. From all the research I've done I've heard that West Systems G Flex works best for adhesion. I've also heard that O-ring cord stock works good for pins if you want flexible pins. I also heard that micarta works fine for pins. That's probably what I will use. When shaping the handles make sure you use a lower grit belt and make sure it's new and sharp.
