Adding a thumb stud?

Hi, I was thinking of adding a thumb stud to my Gerber LST. I believe it's made out of 420HC stainless. Is there a any danger of cracking the blade if I drill too close to the edge. I believe that 420HC is one of the softer metals. Has anyone done something similar that can comment, or should I just not bother and leave well enough alone?

Any comments will be much appreciated.
