Another thought I had...
Wrap the knife in a handkerchief when you put it in your pocket.
Protects the knife, keeps it from slipping out, and a handkerchief is pretty traditional itself.

That coupled with another knife as primary user, would seem to check all the boxes.

I carry a handkerchief myself, though it’s for blowing my nose mostly. I’ve found it handy for many other things as well.

Tethered slip. Much easier than reinforcing or replacing the pocket(s).
Horsewright makes a dandy that's affordable.

I don't know what happened to my Horsewright quote, but I'd forgotten about those. Great idea!
