Adirondacks mystery two-for-one

That mushroom was probably no good anyway.

Even if you don't go back for that one you should remember the spot and check up on it around the same time next year when the weather has been doing whatever it's been doing lately. That tree is infected with the Hericium mycelium and is likely to produce more fruitings - until the mushroom consumes the tree.

So you now have a mushroom spot - you've potentially got years of harvesting ahead of you!

PS - mushroom spots are highly guarded secrets - reveal it to anyone and you may have to kill them! ;)

Red, you be dead.

I did end up going back... today! I was deer hunting in the area so I took a walk to the tree and snagged that fungus! It didn't look as nice and snowy white as it did a few weeks ago; the ends of the "teeth" were starting to yellow a bit. I rinsed it off thoroughly (still picturing those nasty slugs, even though they were gone) and broke it up and sauteed it in butter. The flavor is supposed to be reminiscent of crab or lobster. I found the texture to be a lot like it, but couldn't really identify or notice any taste at all!

I took a look around the area and found another beech tree with two of these mushrooms on it, way up high, out of reach. I'll be sure to return there late next summer and do some collecting.

Don't ask me for the location! ;)
