Adjust the pivot on a Benchmade Grippy 551s

So, i took apart my grippy and lubed up the washes with my favorite grease. Yes, i usually use a teflon lube, but i've found if i apply the grease right it lasts longer and won't collect pocket lint if it doesnt get all over everything. So I did that, smooth as butter. When i got my grippy i could pull the axis lock and the blade would fall out. It did this with the teflon lube too. It also would do this with the grease but i realized it had a bit of side to side bladeplay( with the teflon and the grease, don't remember if it came like that.), and that drives me nuts ever since i learned knives had it! So, i can flick it both open and closed fine, but when i pull the lock it doesnt fall out. I don't know if it came from the factory a tad loose, but theres no medium. It either falls out with a little blade play, or doesnt with no play, and i'm pretty good at hitting that spot. So, do your grippys do this too or do they fall out? I got one of the flat black clips for it though, so it looks sweet. Wasn't too keen on the painted one.

I find that if you have the pivot loose enough for the blade to drop out by gravity alone, there will be a small amount of blade play when the knife is open.

If the pivot is tight enough to eliminate blade play, you have to give the knife a gentle flick while holding back the Axis studs to deploy the blade...or just use the thumb studs.

I also noticed today, after the loc tite had dried on the pivot, that the washer on the torx head pivot side of the knife stays stationary while the other washer moved when the blade moves. Is this normal? My grandfatherS 710 and my brothers kershaw scallion both have washers that stay stationary.

Some people polish the washers. Never had much improvement when I did such.

Seems to be a bit of popularity in changing out the scales for after-market ones.

Drop by the Benchmade site's forum and you can see some pictures of such.

Oh, well I am currently running low on cash so i would be looking more for things i can do at home. The washers actually seem pretty good, i won't waste my time polishing them. I'll drop by that forum though.

I took mine a part and polished the blade but only where it pivots (so you can't see it)to a mirror shine with a dremel tool. It's now tight, has ZERO blade play, and falls out of the handle by pulling back on the axis lock.Just like butter.

What attachment did you use? Is it worth the time? I'm pretty handy but i have no confidence in myself when it comes to expensive things.

I just used the little white dremel polishing wheels that come with the bit kits you can get.It really doesn't take all that long to do with a dremel tool.Take care not to heat the blade to much when doing the polishing,or you'll ruin the heat treat.I used a coffee mug filled with ice & water.Dunk the blade in it every few seconds to keep the heat down, and you'll do fine.
I've had great results with my grip very tight and smooth. It's not really needed IMO.Anything with a axis lock is already smooth as butter. But I was board, and I just though I'd take it to another level of smoothness.lol
