Adopted cat problem need advice

Last night I finally had a chance to spend time with the cat on his terms. He came out from behind my heatreating oven and let me stroke him until he was purring quite loudly and enjoyed it very much.

He is a big cat with black and white markings. One ear is black, the other is white which is how he got his name Oreo by the previous owner. His front claws are declawed which is why he might be cautious. Next step will be to coax him out of the shop and basement and get him into the living room for a visit.

I am excited you've made progress!!!!

Good on you for adopting him!!! :D

Sometimes these things just have a way of working themselves out.

Of course there are some cats that just never want to blend in... We had two persians. Coco came to us right from the breeder as a "smaller than fist" sized fluff ball. A couple years later, Yanni (hey, he was named by his previous owners! lol) came to us via adoption. He was a year younger, but literally twice as big (Coco was but a tiny 7.5-8 pounds and Yanni looked like a brown bear at 15-16 pounds and 3" long fur!).

They fought... and fought.... and fought.... and fought.... until finally after a couple years they learned to just tolerate each other and go their separate ways. Yanni was with us until he was 15, and Coco hit 17 last year before she passed. So there was a lot of years they just left each other alone.

So kind of sad they never hit it off.... but the thing that REALLY mattered... they both loved us all very much and made our lives all the richer.

I sure hope you get not only that love, but that the two kitties can make good with each other as well!!!  :)

Good news.
BTW - "Aoratos" is Greek for "Invisible" or "Unseen". It could be pronounced Ah-oreo-toes ( actual Ah-or-ah-toes).

Oreo is a shop cat as he has made this part of the house his home. Whenever I go in there he comes out to greet me, cuddle a bit and then just sleep while I work. He is a bit of a 'fraidy' cat and needs alot of reassurance.

He followed me across the basement yesterday for the first time, I decided to pick him up and take him upstairs. Right away Jake followed me, and then when I put Oreo on my lap I heard a hiss from Jake, yes that's right a hiss.

This is the first time Jake (who is very timid) made an agressive exchange in his 16 years. Jake has been a coward most of his life getting bullied by his brother and my female cat, both who passed away years ago. Oreo left my lap after a few seconds and made his way back to the basement. There is unease between the two cats, but so far no fighting- not yet anyway.

Your story about Jake, his history, and all of a sudden hissing at Oreo hits really close to home!!!

Little fancy pants, persian kitty Coco was only 7-8 pounds in her younger years and VERY TIMID. By the time she was 15 she was only about 5 pounds (still healthy overall... just a little old lady).

That's about the time we rescued Chance Kayden from life as a stray/ferell cat. She would hiss at him and wouldn't hesitate to haul off with 5 or 6 rapid fire swipes if he got in her personal space! :D

BTW- You know without pics of Jake and Oreo that none of this is really happening right?!?!? ;) :D

Okay without any hard feelings here, yes I would post pics if I knew how. If windows comes up with an operating system where I can simply select, cut and paste photos I would understand that.

Not all of us grew up with computers, and I simply don't understand the current technical jargon and process to do this, nor do I even want to spend more time trying. I wasted enough time on it.
