Advantage ALOX!

Great looking knife. Can someone explain to me about the ALOX? I keep seeing this. What is special about this ALOX?

Also, what kind of steel is on these? How is the edge retention on abrasive materials? How about whittling? Good for that?

Thanks,

ALOX refers to the anodized aluminum scales. The 93mm ALOX models are based on the 1961 Swiss army soldier knife. they are extremely stout, hard use (for a slipjoint) knives.

Basically the Swiss version of the Boy Scout knife.

The steel is kinda like 420HC but RC is lower (56 or I've read)..and it holds a decent edge. Various sites have it from spectacular to mediocre. Based on 43 years using SAKs, I have never had a problem with it (and I'm a carbon steel fanatic)...it is what it is, a good basic stainless. I've read lots of stuff on the net on how the bushcraft folks use it to whittle but I have no experience on that.

The one above is an older model Pioneer, add a saw and it becomes a Farmer, replace the can opener/screwdriver tool with a wire stripper blade and it becomes an Electrician.

They are strong, require little or no maintenance and are extremely long lived knives.

SAK guy, Thanks so much!

Sounds like a solid little workhorse!

I was looking and it seems they are very hard to find. I was liking the looks of the Sailor.

Seems a lot of variations over the years?

The stainless should be nice for a no worries blade tossed in a pack.

I always loved SAK's but never really researched these.

You are very welcome Kevin! The ALOX models are very popular.

I have at least one of these ALOX models stowed in every one my emergency/wildfire/camping bags/packs...they are quality gear and utterly dependable.

BTW, this is the Soldier, the Swiss issue knife up until 2007.

I almost forgot...the 93mm ALOX blades are bigger and thicker than std Vic 91mm blades!

ALOX is also the acronym for aluminum oxide. Not sure but it seems this is another way to described the trademark scales.

now if those puppies cam with stag and brass bolsters I'd bag one that ally just doesn't do it for me...
