Hi guys just wondering what the functional advantages of the barong shape machete is? Pros and cons? Is it purely a martial implement?

Also wondered what the manufacturing complexities are for this shaped blade? Is it more or less easy than other styles to turn out, particularly for traditional makers?

Firstly an agricultural tool and secondly favored weapon of Moros warriors.

I'm fairly certain the barong was intended for use as a weapon. They had other bladed implements for use as agricultural tools. Of course the shape and name have been since co-opted, leading people to think otherwise.

As far as tool (rather than weapon) use goes, it gives an interesting balance between woody target suitability and lighter vegetation. The centrally located mass distribution can be used for chopping woody targets, but keeps the point of balance closer to the hand so it's easy to get the tip up to speed for the light stuff.
