Adventures in Hop Farming

I'm a bit of a hop aficionado myself. Good luck with your new venture.;)

Awesome post man. I was looking at 10 acres on Prairie Creek when I was up there, but when my father-in-law passed away we knew we needed to be back down here to help mom out. Some amazing pieces of property available out in the country up there. With all the micro-brewing going on Hops was one of the things I was considering growing. Would still love to buy some land up there for later. If I ever become wealthy, I shall own a summer home in Michigan :)

This thread is so full of cool!!! What kind of hops are you growing? Here's my current brewing setup:

I would love to try some of your hops in my home brews!

To help you get acclimated to the layout of the property. Top pic shows the two parcels (now one), burnt barn and elevation from the county GIS circa 2010.

On the far left, the "980" on the old boundary marks the spring, aka The Source, you can see the stream better in the GE pic below. Also, the ravine I blocked off for the range.

The next is from June. Shows the new barn, drive, hop arbor is top right center, range low left, I have plowed and tilled the top left field in the depression for a food plot for the critters. Lots of wildlife and we are in the middle of trophy deer area. And lots of turkey and just about every songbird I've see in Michigan I have seen on this property. The wood are a mix with lots of oak.

Great thread Hop!

Good luck with the upcoming hoptacular!

Thank you!

Beautiful property my friend!

Oh yeah.

This thread is an unexpected gem. TFP! (Thanks for posting)

Had I known, I'd have shared it sooner.

It's a good plan. . .there is something about Michigan summers. . . perhaps just to make up for the winters.

Very cool! I'm upgrading mine to HERMS just now, I'll post pics when I get it together.

We bet the farm on Horizon with a couple test rows of Tahoma and Columbia.

We went with the Horizon knowing we would never grow enough hops to support a production beer. . .so we went with something different to cater to the current trend where the demand seems to be for variety.

I'll hook you up with hops, but I hope you are patient, we decided to allow the plants to become established this fall rather than harvest them. So, this time next year.

Sweet! Mine is in the process of being converted over to a RIMS. I just ordered the Blichmann "Tower of Power".

Really gorgeous. Where do y'all make the burlap micarta?

I want to know where the mud bog is... Or is it pretty much anywhere off the beaten path?

Now I seriously need to look for land.

Thank you! This thread has highlighted the Shadetree research, development and proving grounds.

Son of fod mines the laminates in an undisclosed location deep under Shadetree Central. . .

Down thru the cellar and under the gimp room. . .

:D

Seriously, I'll see if Dylan will post some pics of the Shadetree production facility along with some of the newest from the mines. (retired hammock!). He is in a clean and organize mode just now, so it may be a little while before he gets to it.

This is a very cool thread. So when are we going to see a batch of "Beer Hop Bud" burlap? :D

Phil

Thanks Phil.

beer bud laminate could happen. . .I'll need to look out for used hop sacks.

After we pull the twine down this weekend, he will repurpose it into the first ever hop twine laminate.
