Advice #2

Great advice Gun Snob i hadn't thought about a lot of that. My wife probably does think she's got my back, but that won't work. Great advice. Thanks much. Ron

Yeah kids are a real problem, the biggest issue when thinking about HD these days with the laws like they and also taking into account the kids friends when they come over. The legal issues are and can be overpowering.

It's impossible to keep guns loaded and handy if there are kids in the house.

If the guns not loaded it's like having a water gun, not much use. ;)

If you have to unlock something to get to the said gun, that takes time and that's time you won't likely have in a real life situation. Criminals know this too by the way. ;)

Even if you do teach them proper safety etc they are still kids and really can't be trusted to leave you stuff alone especially today.

That's the main reason I sold all my guns years ago, they weren't my kids so there wasn't anyway I was going to keep them in the house.. I couldn't keep them loaded and accessible so I just sold them all off, that's all 30+ that I had. I would have been a real PITA to keep them around.

It's not impossible to keep a gun safely loaded and ready. It's called concealed carry. Get a Kel-tec P3at or Ruger LCP and wear it at all times. If you're concerned about children, get a v-line vault for when you're sleeping, showering, etc.
The safest and most useful place for a loaded gun is on your person.

You are going to carry a gun on your person 100% of the time when you are home... LOL

I have the number of a really good PHD if you need it. ;)

You mean you don't carry 24/7???! I only have 2 words for you, my friend... ZOMBIE BAIT!!!

Seriously though, with kids care must be taken. But as we all know, curiosity killed the cat. Kids aren't much different. If you make it a mystery you will only increase their curiosity. Let them hold it if they wish, unloaded naturally. Remove the mystique. Take them shooting with you. Educate them.

Shoot a cola can that has been shaken with your 22. It will explode in spectacular fashion... and that is just a little 22... imagine what the big bullets do. ;) They will learn to respect the firearm. Keep safe.

.... and watch out for zombies!

With kids I think education is the key. 30 or 40 years ago there were an awful lot of kids that grew up around guns and started shooting when the rifle was bigger than they were. Those kids were taught from day one about safety and to respect guns not fear them. I think its tougher now when kids spend there weekends playing shooter video games with friends, not hunting with Dad. They don't see guns the same way, so it takes more work. But it can be done and is worth doing.

A .22? You wouldn't need to be hopped up on much more than sharpie markers to withstand a shot from that. :D

If I was going to recommend a .22, I would for sure say a Ruger Mark II or III

with at least a 6 inch barrel.

I can tell you, that I am unreal accurate with mine (I guess 20 years of shooting it fast and accurate pay off).

I would not feel undergunned with it, because I guarantee I can all 10 shots in your head anywhere in the house distance. I would bet a dollar, even if you were running sideways, I could still put all 10 in your body, and even possibly your head.

A little bit ago, a woman and her husband were sitting at home, the front door burst open and three men armed with handguns barged in. They shot her husband, and she made it to a Ruger .22 pistol. With only 10 rounds, two of the three intruders were dead. The third got away (after running over one of the other two who had fallen down after a couple rounds in him).

They were all armed with larger caliber handguns, but never once hit her in the exchange of bullets.

I usually have a .40 glock (which my wife is quite good with) and a longer barreled .357 S&W with a 6 inch barrel, and another snubbie .357 if I need it. I also have in reach a 12 gage Winchester Defender with a mix of Buck shot and lighter loads. Sometimes I also keep a 30 round clip for the AR loaded up with hollowpoints.

The most important thing to remember is you have to be prepared to use it, and know how to use it. A 15 round clip of high performance hollow points will do you no good if all you hit is walls and floor with it. With my Glock 40, I can still make an unsupported head shot out to 100 yards if I focus. Close up, much better, but if some one was shooting back, or real close in a high stress situation I doubt calmly squeezing a trigger and rechecking the sights will be an easy task.

Baseball bat. I preffer ash, but aluminum works too. I keep guns locked up after a break in at my old house resulted in a stolen pistol.

The only time my guns are not in the safe is if they are on me, or right next to me.

I don't recommend leaving them unlocked when you are not home.

If some one is in my house and gets that gun right next to my head, before I do, then I guess I am in real trouble anyway. I also sleep with a sharp knife tucked in the mattress with just the handle poking out. You can't really see them in the light, let alone in the dark.

I am decent with a knife, especially throwing (which I would not do unless I had a back up in my other hand).

I also have a sword and a battle axe (did i mention I am good at throwing hawks, and full sized axes.......kind of my hobby).

Recently there was a college kid who caught a burglar in the garage. He had a katana for home defense. The story made the national news, and that intruder is dead. A single swing removed the burglar's arm and oped his chest up. You can hear him dying in the background as the college kid is on the phone with 911.

A big sharp blade can end a situation instantly, if you are half way decent with it (something like a Waki, AK or Ruck would do the trick excellently). I have a double edged bastard sword (not as cool as an AK or Waki), but I could cut a person in half length wise with it, I guarantee.

The only consideration, is that guy who actually has a pistol or other gun. Unless you surprise them, and catch them coming around a corner leading with the gun (mr Stubby will be his new nick name).

I hardly notice it's on me. Why take it off when I get home?

And no, not 100% of the time. I'll take my chances showering and a few other rare instances. Do you think criminals will be kind enough to leave me alone because I'm at home or call in advance and give me warning that they plan on endangering my family?

I don't "need" to stay armed but if it's convenient, it's a choice I'm comfortable with so to speak. :D

I would suggest a Mossberg home defense shot gun. Or if your looking for a pistol that wont break the bank, is small, highly accurate, and your wife could shoot, then I would recommend a Makarov 9mm. I got one 10 years ago for $176.00, It is a nice pistol. I have a Sig p225 and would take the Makarov over it any day.
I would highly recommend a gun safety course for both you and your wife and some time on the range as well. Even if you did shoot with your dad years ago. Getting familiar and comfortable with your new gun and learning the latest technique. You need to know your gun and be very comfortable with it, because God forbid the time does come that you need to use it " in a stressful situation", you don't want to be fumbling with the safety. Just my two cents. Good luck and hopefully no more break-ins for you...hey how about a dog. I can vouch for German Sheppard's, great with kids, very protective.

Note to self: Don't go to Bigfattyt's house unannounced... :D

I like your style, man...

Mostly in fun there. I don't even have a gun next to my head right now. (However, that shaving sharp machete that I just convexed tonight, and both that bastard sword and battle axe, both the real deal too) are right next to me.

I have actually had to draw a live gun twice in my life, both at home. Did not have to shoot either time. So I do really know what it is like to have some one wake me up in the middle of the night and say "someone is trying to break in".

I have also had a driveby on my house, from a real bad dude, right after he really hurt my brother, and he had a proven track record of going after people's family members. He even put his own mother in the ICU with a baseball bat, and beat up a cop in the cops own house.

I grew up in a house where I bought my first 2 pistols with lawmowing money before when I was 12 (I already had a Ruger 10-22 and Marlin 30-30).
During that period with the bad dude, right after the drive by on the house, I slept in the living room with a Winchester defender with Buck shot.

Rifle- What- 10/22 from Ruger. Why- If your wife is going to be using it also it doesn't kick, Small learning curve, and some great after market adds to make it look like a much meaner weapon.

Pistol- Unless you are comfortable with pistols I do not like to sugest them to "new to guns" folks. If you have kids they are just to darn easy to make a mistake with. You can always put a folding stock on a shot-gun or .22 to make it very stashable.

Shotgun- Here I would go for a 20 gauge pump. 12 gauge has a heck of a whoolp on the back-end size. Nice thing about a shot-gun is you can always buy slugs and it will pretty much go though anything. (There are also some very nice special type cartridges.)

Anyways good luck!!!!

...Thank goodness for Moabs and Killa Zillas, because when he saw me w/ my two,he was gone.

It doesn't get any better than that, but it's probably prudent to invest in a good 12ga pump. Rem870, Mossberg 590, or various others will handle a lot of bad juju. If the wife can't handle the 12ga, just get her a 20ga.

Again---Thanks--I'm overwhelmed by the Hogs' knowledge and willingness to share w/ a stranger. Ron
